Police are looking for suspects in the fatal shooting of a Hartsville man Thursday morning.

The attorney representing the Varinecz family of Myrtle Beach says the 16-year-old recently shot to death by a school resource officer is remembered as a “polite, kind soul.”

A man in custody on federal weapons charges is charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a Florence man more than a month ago, Florence Police Maj. Carlos Raines said.

A Florence man facing the death penalty in connection with the 2008 death of Willie Mae Hayes will remain in custody until his trial, 12th Circuit Solicitor Ed Clements III said.

The funeral for the 16 year old Carolina Forest High School student who police said stabbed an Horry County School Resource Officer last week is set for Wednesday.

Carolina Forest principal Velna Allen said she was anxious about the students returning to school Monday after Friday’s shooting and stabbing incident.
Allen said although she was anxious on Monday, the day was what she expected and she said knew students would rise to the occasion and day went very well.

During the 2008-2009 school year, 117 students were expelled for bringing a non-firearm weapon on the ground of a SC school. An additional 18 students were expelled for having a firearm on campus.

The Horry County police report obtained by News13 says that the teen, later identified as 16-year-old Trevor Varinecz, had two knives while in the officer’s school office.

Students returned to class at Carolina Forest High School Monday morning after a stabbing and shooting Friday.

12th Circuit Court Judge Ralph King Anderson Jr. postponed a bond hearing Monday until November for a man accused of participating in a double slaying case.

Allen said students and parents will notice a difference when they arrive Monday morning.  “We’re going to have additional staff, I’m going to shift us to more of the key entry points, not because I think we need to from a security standpoint, but I think it’s important that parents realize that we took it serious and we’re here and I think they need to see us first thing when they get here.“

As the investigation continues into to why a fight broke out between a student at Carolina Forest High School and the school’s resource officer, and police saying the student was shot and killed after stabbing the officer, students returned to class for the first time since the incident.

One person is dead and a second was flown to New Hanover Regional Medical Center after an early Saturday morning one-car traffic collision.

Claude Earl Reed, who was charged with accessory after the fact of a felony in the Geraldine “Jerry” Scott slaying case, has broken his probation/parole after authorities say he stole the vehicle of former Judge Hicks Harwell, according to 12th Circuit Solicitor Ed Clements III.
