New Millennium Building Systems, a joist manufacturing company based out of Fort Wayne, Ind., has announced the closing of its plant in Florence.

Some good news has arrived for Florence residents looking for jobs. The new Wal-Mart SuperCenter on Beltline Drive is slated to open sometime this fall. Company leaders say that means between 250 and 300 jobs will be available—jobs that are much needed in the Pee Dee.

A day after Mohawk Industries announced it will shut down its manufacturing facility in Dillon, some local business owners are assessing how the closing will affect them.

Mohawk Industries Inc. announced plans Tuesday to close its yarn manufacturing facility in Dillon within 60 days.

South Carolina’s high unemployment rate reached its highest in 15 years. That rate means big problems for everyone in the state.  The state’s unemployment trust fund is almost broke.

Unemployment rates for the Pee Dee and the state increased for a second straight month, according to data for August released Friday by the S.C. Employment Security Commission.

A plant in Marlboro County has closed its doors for good, effective immediately, increasing the county’s already high unemployment rate. Ox Bodies, a dump truck manufacturer in Bennettsville, came to South Carolina about five years ago and employed 30 people in the county.

Marlboro County is the only county out of seven counties in the Pee Dee to show no change in unemployment rates, while the others have shown slight increases for June.

The Heinz company, which will be putting a plant in Florence County, is looking for suppliers, Frank Jones told Marion County Economic Development Commissioners, and the Russell Stover building is back on the market.

With jobs like Monster and Heinz moving to the Pee Dee, people are hoping it will become easier to find a job. 

The South Carolina Employment Security Commission released the state’s unemployment numbers for the month of May, and unemployment rose sharply.

Every Tuesday and Thursday from September to May, Lake City High School junior Jodi Lee climbed into her car at 9:30 a.m. and left the school’s campus. She wasn’t leaving so she could skip Anne Andren’s Accounting II class and climb back in bed for some extra sleep. Instead, she left a traditional classroom to go to another one that is quite different.

Marion County had the second-highest unemployment rate in the state, behind Allendale County, for May, according to the report from the S.C. Employment Security Commission.
