A few people have asked recently if they can vote in the upcoming mayoral election in Hartsville even though they live outside the city limits.

The Darlington County Board of Elections and Voter Registration will have a new home by the end of this year.

Gov. Mark Sanford keeps saying that it’s for others to decide if he should be impeached.

Friday’s noon filing deadline for Hartsville city elections passed quietly with no surprises and no new filers. That means a two-person race for mayor and only one of three City Council seats contested.

In the race for mayor, former council member and former city Finance Director Pam Sansbury will face businessman Mel Pennington. The two are seeking to succeed former Mayor Michael Holt who resigned in August to assume a seat on the state family court bench.

At least one member of Hartsville City Council will face a challenge in the November municipal election.

Hartsville City Councilman Bob Braddock filed Wednesday to run for reelection to the District 5 seat on council.

During Darlington County Council’s Aug. 17 meeting, council curtailed the number of public meetings on its calendar with only one dissenting vote. The possibility of cutting council’s regular meeting schedule from two meetings a month to one a month is nothing new, according to Chairman Wesley Blackwell.

State Rep. Nikki Haley, R- Lexington, will bring her campaign for the Republican nomination for governor to Hartsville on Monday.

Filing for Seats 1, 4, and 7 of Florence County School District 5 Board of Trustees will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning June 15.
Filing will close at noon July 1.

A newcomer will join Bennettsville City Council in District 3, according to the unofficial results of Tuesday’s city election.

David Alford was welcomed to the fold as the new Florence County Voter Registration and Election executive director during the commission’s quarterly meeting Wednesday morning.

Incumbent Johnny Jenkins and former school board member Elleveen Poston have been elected to serve another term as members of Florence School District 2 Board of Trustees.

Florence School District 2 will hold its annual citizens’ meeting at 8 p.m. Thursday where two school board members will be elected and the proposed 2009-10 operating budget will be presented.
