Marlboro County School board OKs second reading of budget

Members of the Marlboro County School District Board of Education have approved second reading of the district’s proposed 2008-09 budget totaling $29,976,392, which doesn’t include a millage increase.

FMU receives major gift from PSARAS Foundation

James S. Konduros, chairman of the PSARAS Foundation, announced Tuesday the donation of $500,000 to Francis Marion University to fund an educational and service initiative in memory of Gov. Robert E. McNair, founding member of the university.

Williamsburg Technical College president Cleve H. Cox and his wife, Janice, recently showed their support for the Campaign for Educational Enrichment at the college under the auspices of the Williamsburg Technical College Foundation by providing funding for a President’s Scholarship.

FMU to hold summer orientation sessions

Francis Marion University will hold five orientation sessions this summer for new students who will begin classes at the university in the fall.

Three different senior classes graduate in one arena

When you have a graduation to plan, it’s a little hectic.  When you’re planning three rival high schools’ graduations in one building, it has to be clock work.  Wilson High at 10 AM, South Florence at two, and West Florence at six in the evening.  The students though, wouldn’t have it any other way. 

Students to switch to uniforms this fall

Johnakin Middle School students will begin wearing uniforms when they return to school in August. The Marion County school sent letters about the dress code to all JMS parents on May 8, after the Marion School District 1 Board of Trustees approved the policy in April.

Seniors to graduate without student accused in bomb plot

Students at Chesterfield High School rehearsed Friday for graduation, but one of their seniors wasn’t there and won’t be walking with them. Eighteen-year-old Ryan Schallenberger remains in custody at the Chesterfield County Detention Center.
