Fred Mattox, 89, was the last person to leave the former Darlington Manufacturing Co. cotton mill when it shut down in 1956 because he was the chief electrician charged with shutting off the power.

Darlington sanitation worker still going strong in 70s

Jerome “Sonny” McCall was working the trim saw at a saw mill in the Mont Clare section of Darlington County 17 years ago when the Sonoco-owned facility closed. McCall, 59 at the time, was caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place.

Darlington police chief suspended

Darlington Police Chief Jay Cox was suspended this week as a result of an investigation being conducted by the city. Darlington City Manager Rodney Langley said Cox received a two-day unpaid suspension that began Monday.

Children trade in pool for Darlington Youth Summer Camp

Children in Darlington might not have a pool to swim in, but they now have another place to go to enjoy their summer. People concerned about a lack of summer youth activities approached Darlington City Council in April, with support from councilwoman Dyan Cohen, asking for some type of support for a summer youth basketball league and a double-dutch jump rope camp.

Police have arrested a man, wanted in North Carolina for failing to register as a sex offender, in connection with an assault in Darlington, Darlington Police Capt. Danny Watson said.
