Horry County officials say they were notified Thursday afternoon that a puppy at the county’s animal shelter tested positive for distemper.

Horry County council members voted Monday to terminate the contract with the Horry County Humane Society. The HCHS was awarded the contract to run the county’s animal shelter in June 2006, but the cover up of a deadly viral outbreak has led to the group’s dismissal.

The Grand Strand Animal Shelter re-opened its doors Tuesday morning.

An animal from the Grand Strand Humane Society tested positive for distemper.

Animal adoptions and owner drop-offs resumed at the Horry County Animal Shelter on Friday. A county spokesperson says two visual assessments of all the animals living at the shelter were completed by a veterinarian and no of the animals exhibited any signs of distemper.
