Ads aim to recruit men, minorities to teach in S.C.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ State Education Superintendent Jim Rex says upcoming TV ads will focus on recruiting men and minorities to teach in South Carolina.

Rex says the ads will begin airing before Thanksgiving.

Rex says private donations paid for the ads, which highlight the rewards of making a difference in children's lives.

Schools are struggling to fill vacancies, and educators say finding male and minority teachers can be especially difficult.

Last year, South Carolina districts hired more than 8,000 teachers. But the state's Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement says that, when the 2006 school year started, nearly 700 vacancies remained.

Minorities and men each accounted for about 20 percent of the new hires.
