Facilities director resigns in wake of field house debacle
The man who oversaw the evaluation of the Jap Davis Field House at New Hanover High School will not oversee its renovation. Carmen Gintoli left his job as director of facility planning for New Hanover County Schools earlier this month. According to John Welmers, assistant superintendent for human resources, Gintoli resigned Sept. 1. Eddie Anderson was promoted from project manager to interim director.

77 year old inmate dies in Brunswick County Jail
A 77 year old man in jail for a probation violation was found dead in his cell Tuesday night.

Loggerhead turtles return to sea at Topsail Beach
As nine turtles were released from the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center Wednesday morning, one had a special tracking device attached. Sennet, a 128-pound loggerhead turtle, was released with the tracker fixed to his shell.

Comspeco wants to blanket Wrightsville Beach with Wi-Fi coverage
A Wilmington-based firm is offering free wireless Internet service to homeowners and businesses at Wrightsville Beach that are willing to become part of its infrastructure. Comspeco is trying to find new sites to expand coverage into some “dead zones” and will install service nodes at qualifying locations, which will bestow free service for at least a year.

Sales tax 1 percent higher - now 7.75 percent locally
Don’t be surprised if that shirt, skirt, TV or tire costs a little more today. That’s when North Carolina’s state sales tax goes up, by 1 percentage point, to 5.5 percent from 4.5 percent. Combined with the local sales tax of 2.25 percent – the same as the rest of the state, except eight counties – you’ll pay a total of 7.75 percent.

Red Springs priest cleared
The Robeson County District Attorney’s Office has concluded its investigation of a Red Springs Roman Catholic priest and says no charges will be filed. The office said Wednesday it had reviewed an allegation that Father Walter Ospina of Iglesia Catolica San Andres in Red Springs acted inappropriately.

Attorney: Soles fired in self-defense
An attorney for state Sen. R.C. Soles said on Monday the 74-year-old legislator shot a law client with a pistol at his Columbus County home Sunday after the man and another client tried to kick in several doors. The shooting victim, Thomas Kyle Blackburn, a 22-year-old convicted felon, was released from Loris Community Hospital Monday night after he was shot in the leg about 5 p.m. Sunday.
