Mary Ann Chapman and Lenora Lefew make plans for the Women’s League of Hartsville’s annual membership drive and holiday market being held in conjunction with the drive at Black Creek Arts Center from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Women who are interested in learning more about the club and joining are invited to attend.
Women’s League of Hartsville will hold its Third Annual Membership Drive and Holiday Market from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Black Creek Arts Center, 116 W. College Ave.
The League decided to combine its membership drive with the fun of the holiday market. The market will include booths filled with items for the holidays from Flossie Mae’s, The Rain Maker, Minnie’s Giftique, Thirty-One Gifts, Hobnob Gourmet, Saffron Catering, Lulu’s Merle Norman and more.
“This is the first time to hold the membership drive in conjunction with the Holiday Market,” said League Member Lenora Lefew.
They are inviting women to come out, find out more about the Women’s League of Hartsville, and hopefully join, visit the booths of numerous shops and restaurants and get a head start on their holiday shopping.
The market is free to attend as it is not a fund-raising event for the club.
The Women’s League, formerly the Newcomers Club, has been raising funds for the past 30 years to help others in the community. Members have raised more than $150,000 for charitable organizations, primarily through the club’s annual auction. Last year, the Women’s League raised $15,000 at its auction. Carolina Kids received $10,000 and the Darlington County Humane Society received $2,000. The club reserves $1,000 to present a scholarship each year to a female student from an area high school.
This year the 23rd Annual Women’s League Charity Auction will take place on Feb. 6 and beneficiaries will be The Durant Children’s Center and Kalmia Gardens.
Lefew and Member Mary Ann Chapman said the club is a social organization that has an auction each year to help the community. The club also provides Christmas for a couple of local, needy families. The names are provided by school guidance counselors and social workers.
The group started as an organization for new women in town, so they could get together socially and get acquainted. As the years passed, members remained in the club, and it was no longer a club of newcomers to Hartsville. They said it was about half and half, and that is when they decided to change the name to better reflect its membership. The club has about 40 active members at any given function.
The November meeting will be at LuLu’s Merle Norman at 7 p.m. Nov. 10. All females are invited; they do not have to be new to town.
In December, the club will meet at the Midnight Rooster on Dec. 8 for a Dutch treat meal.
In January, the club will have a work session to get ready for the February auction.
