Current Myrtle Beach City Mayor John Rhodes confirmed Monday that he is running for re-election in Novemeber.
The mayor’s seat in Myrtle Beach is up for re-election this November. Current Mayor John Rhodes tells News 13 he will be running for re-election again this year.
“I’ve had four great years of having an opportunity to represent the people of Myrtle Beach whether it was the business community or the citizens,” said Rhodes on Monday, “so I would like to do that again and if I have done the job that they think I should’ve done then hopefully they’ll put me back in office.“
The mayor has been surrounded by much controversy ever since the new biker ordinances went into effect and now the recent one sales tax.
Rhodes said he knows not everyone can be pleased but there are already successes seen as a result of the ordinances and the new tax.
“There are families coming back that waited until biker rallies were over,” explained Rhodes, “we would not have the funds to advertise with if the one cent tax had not been passed which allowed the chamber to go ahead and use the line of credit and we went from 25 cities doing T.V commercials to 45 cities.”
Some who didn’t favor Rhodes after the city put restrictions on bike rallies came up with groups such as “Help Eliminate Lousy Politicians” and “A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments” to let the mayor know they weren’t happy with the changes.
Rhodes however said that type of attitude still doesn’t deter him from wanting to run for his seat again, knowing very well the ultimate decision is in the hands of the citizens.
“I’ve enjoyed the position I’ve got and I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to represent the homeowner and also the business community in our town but most important, I’m really excited about the fact that we’ve been able to bring back to our community, respect,“ Rhodes said.
Three other council seats are also opened for re-election. Councilman Wayne Gray confirmed to News 13 that he is also once again running for one of the three seats opened.
Filing period for this year’s election starts on Aug. 20 and ends Sept. 4.

SayWhat .you need to go back to elementary school, moron. “Bike weeks have not went away” Mayor Rhodes will win by a landside as retards like you won’t know how to register or find their polling place.Have another beer, rednrck and take a spin on your Harley,if you could ever afford one!!!
wiseoleman should change your name to DUMBOLDFART bikeweeks have not went away! now they just avoid Myrtle Beach and all the buisiness’ WAY TO GO IDIOTMAYOR
Don’t knock the Mayor for the fine job he does year after year with the Beach Ball Classic. Now that the tumultuous bike weeks are history, the BBC probably brings more money to the local economy than any other event. This is especially important in the winter when the beach traffic is nil.
So the Mayor gets rid of Bike Week with no knowledge of how much it brings in and no idea or business plan on how to replace it. Then uses RICO tacticts to force his will on surrounding communities. Institutes laws that fly in the face of both the US Constitution and the State Constitution. The Mayor pays himself $49,000.00 to run the Beach Ball classic so the taxpayers pay for his house and institutes a tax twice to fund this. One tax (3 million ) to advertise that tourists are not welcome and the another tax ( 15 million ) to advertise that they do. If this is the representation that MB residents want so be it. Single member districts and Cleen Sweep is what I say.Oh and how about that video of the Mayors daughter in Charleston. Sweet little girl.
I cannot believe this man honestly thinks that he could or would be re-elected! LMAO!
now that he bike issue has been brought up can and will somebody please tell me the diifference between hundreds of people riding bikes in MB and the hundreds of people that came to MB in their Musstangs a few weeks back? I was visiting the area during the “Mustang Meet and Greet” and i was confussed as why it was ok to have this ralley and not the bike ralley
I do not live in MB nor do i want too. However, I do live in Florence and thanks to the lovely government and select citizen groups in that “fine” area, this area (Florence), as well as many other surrounding communities, are feeling the effects of the choice MB made to satisfy the minority.
I agree that when someone visits the area, they should be respectful, but these same people (bikers) where supporting your community, schools, businesses and overall keeping taxes lower for the same citizens that complained. I bet you money, if you ask a few business owners in MB, they would agree that they did not always like the amount of tourist or noise in the area but it pays the bills and your taxes. It creates jobs and helps lower crimes (crime is up because of job losses)
I suggest that all the individuals that fought to have the regular biker tourist not to come back, maybe you all should make up the difference by creating the jobs that were lost, income that is not coming to those who need it, and the taxes your community was making. Your choices have hurt not only your community, your neighbors but also many other families in the surrounding communities.
Once again an idiot comes to the rescue for an even bigger idiot! it never fails!!!
Once again a few malcontents creep out of their holes to belittle a mayor who has brought dignity, class and serenity back to the grand strand.Let’s see who the disgruntled ones select to oppose our fine mayor..can’t wait!!!
I am not sure what Rhodes means about families coming back. There have not even been any pre or post seasons with people coming back from anywhere. It is a known fact, that this last pre season was one of the worst in history. He needs to hurry up and pull a rabbit out of some where before this post season or it will only show that these imaginary pre and post season tourist that he talks about are just pipe dreams. And I am not talking about Grand Strand tourism, but only what is happening inside city limits. I guess he will now try to take credit for the tax free shopping holiday revenues or the normal summer tourism. He really is just another one of those fast talking politicians that all the foolish people love to believe in. We should start calling him the Pride Piper. Let’s all just follow him in to the ocean of insanity. Chiabone must be referring to the soaring crime rate committed by the locals. I will not get in to talking about getting what you pay for or the way they run their law enforcement. They can put all the traffic cops on day time road blocks at insignificant locations for all I care and I do not care if they do or do not take advantage of modern tools and techniques, but I will say that I have inside information as to what does and does happen on that side of the blue line. I am not really angry since I do not live there other than the lose of Sams club, Best Buy, Battery Store and a handful of other places that I am now boycotting only because they are inside city limits. It is only the motorcyclist and bike tourist that are boycotting. The rallies will only be effecting pre and post season. The real test will be if you’re so called Mayor actually delivers the new pre and post season tourist as promised. He should also come up with some kind of financial amends to all the businesses, and employees that he has harmed. Let me also say that I am not angry at Adolph Hitler, but never the less I hate what he did, what he stood for and how he did it. People like you should be concerned or maybe even angry. Especially if you still live inside city limits, and will have to make of for all that is wrong with your town, with higher taxis, each and every year.
