Florence election officials count 3,000 ballots

FLORENCE — Florence County officials still were in the process Wednesday night of sorting and counting about 3,000 or more absentee ballots.

Because of a number of close races, such as Florence City Council, and the Sunday alcohol sales referendum, there is a possibility those results could change.

Though at this point the process is automated, election officials are taking out the ballots that the machine won’t read, then re-running them individually. If that doesn’t work, then the ballot is hand-counted.

Interim Florence County Elections Director Steve Love said poll workers have been working nearly around the clock to make sure every vote is counted.

“We’ve got all the paper ballots to go through,” he said Wednesday morning. “We’ve got to group them by Absentee (ballot for) One through Four precincts. Then we’ve got to read each of those precincts plus any fail safe ballots that came through yesterday during the election — read them and then add them into the total.”

Love said poll workers were at Election Headquarters until 3 a.m. Wednesday, and were back on the job at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Ladies and Gentlemen:
If you understood the election Process, You would know That the Absentee ballots are always a problem. By Law, Absentee ballots can not be opened until after the Polls are closed.

Until they are opened, The Election Commission has no idea what they contain. Are they subject to tampering? Even less so than paper ballots from the precincts. So you can blame all those people who were too lazy or busy to go to the polls and voted Absentee.

The Election workers Are from all parties and work together to insure a fair and and valid election.

I should know. I was a Precinct Chairman for many years.

This couldn’t have been reported earlier, say Tuesday night? It’s Wednesday evening as I write this, and this story wasn’t here for most of the day. Someone REALLY didn’t know there were 3000 ballots which weren’t counted?

Nice.

I think we just took one in the “chads”...

I think this is representative of the lack of honesty that exists in the people that are responsible for counting and reporting the results.  This is simply an effort or means for people in higher positions to attain the results they were seeking. This is more dissappointment in addition to the long lines at the polls. We know when each election year is. Why aren’t we properly equipped, staffed, and prepared for the voting every election year?

Something smells fishy here!

I hope this is a well documented process that leaves no room for error!
