At least one member of Hartsville City Council will face a challenge in the November municipal election.

Jannie Harriot filed Monday to run for the District 1 seat on council. She will challenge long-time Councilwoman Adlena Graham, who has held the District 1 seat since June 1993. Graham, who is retired, was the first candidate to file for council for the upcoming election.

Harriot is the retired executive director of the Allendale County First Steps program and is vice chair of the S.C. African American Heritage Commission. She is also affiliated with the African American Historical Alliance.

Incumbent Councilman Bob Braddock has filed to run for reelection to the District 5 council seat.

Voters will elect council members in Districts 1, 3 and 5 on Nov. 3 and will also elect a new mayor.

Pam Sansbury, a former council member and former city finance director, and businessman Mel Pennington are the only two candidates who have filed for mayor as of Tuesday afternoon. They are running to succeed former Mayor Michael Holt, who resigned on Aug. 2 to take a seat on the state family court bench.

As of mid-day Tuesday, no other candidates had filed to run for council or mayor.
The filing period for city offices remains open until noon on Friday. Candidates must file and pay their filing fees with the city clerk’s office.

Citizens who wish to vote in the election must be registered by Oct. 3.
