Timmonsville residents voted to elect incumbents Eleanor Pigate and Mary Hyman and newcomer Patti Maney to fill the three at-large seats of Florence School District 4’s Board of Trustees for the next four years.
Board member Mary Floyd did not seek re-election.
Pigate won with 321 votes, Hyman won with 259 votes and Maney won with 262 votes. A total of 1,331 registered voters participated in Tuesday’s election.
Pigate and Hyman were not available for comment by press time Tuesday.
Maney, an X-ray technologist/radiologist in Florence, will begin her first term on Florence 4’s board of trustees.
Maney received an associate degree in radiological technology from Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y., and a bachelor’s degree in business from State University of New York at New Paltz.
Maney said she wanted to run for the school board so she would be able to help schools in Timmonsville continue progressing academically.
“Schools are such an important part of the community, that I felt that I wanted to try to help them continue the progress that they have been having,” Maney said. “I have to get my feet wet and find out what the big issues at Timmonsville are.”
Maney said any issue teachers see as important will be her priority to address.
“To me, it’s more of a matter of finding out what the teachers think and what they need,” she said. “Trying to find out what’s going to work to help them continue to progress. Obviously we want to see our test scores go up, drop out rates go down (and) maintain discipline in the classrooms.”
Maney said she wanted to thank her supporters and promises to do what is right for all children, during her time in office.
Other candidates were Richard “Butch” Hodges, former chairman of Florence 4’s board; Woodrow Thomas Jr.; and Wilhelmena G. Washington.
