Randy Reynolds defeated Jackie L. Thomas, with 192 votes to Thomas’ 141, for the Lamar mayor’s post. Voters in Lamar returned to the polls Tuesday to settle a runoff election.

Council agrees to fund broadband study up to $5,000

Hartsville City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to fund up to $5,000 for a feasibility study into the possibility of creating a city-owned fiber optic network that would allow the city to offer broadband services to city residents and businesses on the open market.

More than $13,000 raised for mayoral campaigns

According the South Carolina Ethics Commission Web site, the two candidates for mayor of Hartsville have raised more than $13,000 as of Oct. 20. Mel Pennington has raised $7,906.25 this election cycle, and Pam Sansbury has raised $5,573.44.

Mayoral candidates make final pitches

Pam Sansbury said her years of experience in city government as a member of Hartsville City Council and as city finance director make her the only qualified candidate for the job of mayor.

Mel Pennington said his years on the city’s planning commission, where he currently serves as vice chairman, give him ample experience and insight into the workings of city government.

No surprises with end to filing period

Friday’s noon filing deadline for Hartsville city elections passed quietly with no surprises and no new filers. That means a two-person race for mayor and only one of three City Council seats contested.

In the race for mayor, former council member and former city Finance Director Pam Sansbury will face businessman Mel Pennington. The two are seeking to succeed former Mayor Michael Holt who resigned in August to assume a seat on the state family court bench.

The parents of murder victim Katie Sepich were joined by John Walsh from America’s Most Wanted in presenting Senator Gerald Malloy with the Katie’s Hero Award. The Katie’s Hero Award is an honor bestowed by through the Sepich’s non-profit advocacy group DNA Saves on individuals for leadership in solving and preventing crime by supporting legislation to expand the use of forensic DNA technology. According to the certificate of award, Sen. Malloy was selected for his work on introducing and enacting legislation to require DNA upon felony arrest in South Carolina, to ensure law enforcement is not unwittingly releasing repeat offenders back into the community.
