LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Wukela for honesty, openness in government

It disturbs me that folks like Austin Smith, “Florence voters need to vote for Rocky Pearce,” Sept. 23, cannot accept the fact that Stephen Wukela won the primary election legitimately, and the election results were upheld repeatedly in the appeals process.

If anyone has been “complacent” as Mr. Smith claimed we voters were, perhaps he should level that complaint against Mr. Willis, who obviously did not take Mr. Wukela’s candidacy seriously.

The better question to ask is why is there such a concerted effort to keep Mr. Wukela from becoming mayor.

Is it because he will demand accountability and openness in our city government?

Is it because he will question the “good old boy” system and status quo?

Is it because he will lead with honesty and integrity?

Well, I’m certainly counting on it.

It disturbs me, too. But it barely surprises me. There are big time local politicos are behind this effort to put Rocky back in office after all this time, and their money is behind him, too. He’s their defacto hireling to run things how they want it run; would be puppet masters of our City. Let’s have a look at the campaign contributors to see who holds the purse strings behind the Pearce campaign. If you don’t already know who these people are, ask yourself who benefits? The people who have the gold make the rules, it is said…and these are the people who want to keep it that way. Talk about secret government, favoritism, and back-room deals…giving Rocky the reigns amounts to putting the foxes in charge of the hen house.
