LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Reader shares thoughts, stories about Orlando Hudson

In recent weeks, there have been several letters about Orlando Hudson. I would like to add my thoughts about him.

My husband grew up with, played baseball and worked with Orlando’s dad. We have three sons who played baseball when they were younger. We have followed Orlando’s career since he has been with the MLB.

Orlando is one of the nicest young men I have met. He has not let his success “go to his head.” It is not surprising, knowing his parents. Orlando comes from a very supportive and caring family. I believe that Orlando is passing these same attributes on to his own children. He and his wife are very giving people.

Our family had the privilege of seeing Orlando play baseball in Boston when he was with the Toronto Blue Jays. He was very gracious and met with us after the game, to sign autographs and take pictures. He has done wonderful things for children with autism. Orlando was gracious enough to sign a bat, ball, and baseball card for a very special fan.

My brother has a client, who is a paraplegic. He is a huge Arizona Diamondbacks fan. Since we knew Orlando, my brother asked me if we could get something from Orlando. (This was when he still played for Arizona.) He did it without hesitation. Recently my brother was in Hawaii and presented his client with the souvenirs. Needless to say, he was thrilled to death.

In this day and age when professional athletes are making so much money, it is so refreshing to know one, like Orlando, who does not let it “go to his head.” Orlando does not forget where he comes from and what is important. He is a genuine and down-to-earth person. His family and the city of Darlington should be very proud of him. I, too, think that Darlington should show some type of recognition that Orlando is from their city. I know that my family and I are proud to know Orlando and his family. He is a true inspiration and role model to all! Keep up the good work, Orlando!
