LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Gregg best choice for sheriff in Florence County

» 5 Comments | Post a Comment

We are now in the last lap of the political season — thank goodness.
I wish to remind Democrats that they must remember that they elected a sheriff last time around and he subsequently left the party.
He claims not to be a politician, but why did he publicly abandon his party and those who voted for him? Why was it necessary to change parties if he is not a political animal?
If he is not a politician as recently espoused in the Morning News, why did he attend a Republican gathering “Under the tent” in a local banker’s back yard before he ever left the Democratic Party?
This does not look like a non-political lawman to me.
I think that he is being groomed for higher GOP aspirations and is indeed a political animal all along. I may be wrong, but it just doesn’t pass the smell test to me.
I support Jimmy Gregg — a proven commodity with clearly no political aspirations beyond top cop and serving Florence.
He will quickly improve the espirit d’ corps and better manage the overburdened force that protects us daily.
We have all seen what Republicans and the GOP agenda can do for America (Bush,
Cheney, McCain), the state (do nothing governor) and the City of Florence (old boy network) — nothing good.
It is indeed time for change. Lies are lies and we have had our fill — time to move on.
Please vote.

Ken Curran

I’ve made my opinion in other articles of Jimmy Gregg. To sum it up he’s a great person but as a sheriff his time has come and gone. This county doesn’t need to go back to the “good ol boy” system. We are moving forward and it needs to stay that way. I have no doubt who will win. I’m in the community daily and haven’t met a Jimmy Gregg supporter yet, at least out of handcuffs. GO TEAM BOONE!

Although I am no longer a Florence County resident ... I can not believe that some of you people are talking about the Jimmy Gregg that I knew. I’ve met Jimmy in the mid 70’s when he was an investigator for FCSO and I was with a small town PD. Jimmy was the most dedicated LEO that I knew and when I needed assistance he was the one that I would call upon. I know for a fact that Jimmy must have been an excellent Sheriff for Florence County as he was in office for 12 years. I feel that Sheriff Boone is also a top notch sheriff but both have different ideas? I think that folks of Florence County should look at both canidates and vote your choice .... I don’t think that either canidate should be run down in this manner .... Good Luck on your choice

In my opinion, I think the issue of law enforcement is not about which party you belong to at all. If you base your vote on which party a sheriff belongs to instead of reviewing his effectiveness as a leader and what his staff has accomplished with him at the helm, then I am sorry for you.

You can’t have it both ways. They are both politicians by definition, since the office of Sheriff is an elected position. But while Gregg was in office, he was developing Claussen Crossing & involved heavily in Florence County National Bank; so your bit about being “under people’s tents” doesn’t pass the smell test, either. Boone made a philosophical choice for which he may pay a toll in his political career. Those principles are known as idealism & sacrifice. Jimmy Gregg made choices during his tenure then & now in deciding to run against his one-time protege which are based on his own interests; we call these things selfishness & greed. I’ll take the guy who believes in something & takes responsibility for it ANY day over the guy who is only interested in being sheriff again for himself.

Mr. Curran….I must agree with you on two points: I too will be glad when this political season is over and EVERYONE needs to VOTE. However, I must disagree with your comment regarding Jimmy Gregg; “with clearly no political aspirations beyond top cop and serving Florence.“
I say: Why on earth would you promte your investigator to step in as your replacement upon retirement, and subsequently 4 years later, run against him? Kenny Boone’s record speaks for itself. Why would the voters of Florence county choose to go backwards? Mr. Gregg is retired and needs to stay retired! Now Mr. Curry…this Clearly doesn’t pass the smell test to me!!!
Vote your conscious citizens of Florence county. Vote for Kenny Boone….a good man, a great sheriff!
