EDITORIAL: Rep. Wilson insulted himself, SC
Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., disgraced himself and the state when he interrupted President Barack Obama by shouting, “You lie,” during the commander in chief’s nationally televised speech before a joint session of Congress on Wednesday night.
Wilson’s meltdown as the president talked about health-care reform was another humiliating moment for a state already embarrassed by the disgraceful actions of Gov. Mark Sanford. Even as Sanford goes around the state apologizing for breaching the public’s trust and using state resources for his personal benefit, Wilson bursts into living rooms from coast to coast with his odd behavior.
This is just what South Carolina needs: another public official on an apology tour, attempting to explain his lack of judgment.
Wilson represents a conservative wing of the Republican Party that has taken opposition to health-care reform to extreme measures. Nearly everyone agrees the system needs fixing, yet the president’s opponents turn to immaturity and distortion to win the debate.
Obama triggered Wilson’s unwise comments when he said universal health care would not cover illegal immigrants.
The president went on with his speech as stunned Democrats and Republicans glared in Wilson’s direction. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., who represents the largest portion of the Pee Dee, was outraged, as everyone in the state should be.
To his credit, Wilson apologized and braced himself for an avalanche of criticism. “This evening, I let my emotions get the best of me,” Wilson said in a statement. “While I disagree with the president’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the president for this lack of civility.”
Wilson’s moment of weakness will thrust him into the spotlight. He’ll become a face for foes to health-care reform.
As his face flashes across television screens and shows up as fodder for those who want to pile on South Carolina, it’s worth asking: Who is Joe Wilson, and how in the world did he ever win election to Congress? The name Joe Wilson will be one of the most-searched items on the Internet this week.
Here’s what we know about Wilson: His supporters know he’s a talented 62-year-old Columbia lawyer who has been involved in politics since he was a teen. He represents South Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District, which spans from Columbia to Beaufort and Hilton Head. He was once an aide for the late Sen. Strom Thurmond, R-S.C., and worked in the Reagan administration as a deputy general counsel for former Gov. Jim Edwards at the U.S. Department of Energy.
Wilson was elected to Congress in 2001 after the death of former Congressman Floyd Spence. He faced his toughest re-election battle in 2008, beating Democrat Rob Miller with only 54 percent of the vote. Miller, who is planning to challenge Wilson again in 2010, will benefit from a fundraising windfall as a result of Wilson’s fall from grace. Miller reportedly raised more than $400,000 in the 24 hours after Wilson’s remarks.
In Congress, Wilson has made a difference on many issues. He has been passionate about teacher retention, tax credits for adoption and outlawing video poker. He has been an advocate for safe water and sanitation for developing nations. Unfortunately for Wilson, his political obituary will not focus on his accomplishments. If health-care reform is delayed, it will not be because Wilson accused the president of lying.
Unfortunately for South Carolina, Wilson has given the state another black eye at a time when it cannot afford another bruising. His apology rings hollow at a time when state politicians find their credibility at an all-time low.
Residents of this state do not deserve what Sanford and Wilson have done to them. This is a state wary of federal interference and the tentacles of politicians.
But it’s also a land of good, kind, hard-working people who value their reputation. We do not need the sarcasm, snickers and unsavory spotlight.

I commend Joe Wilson for what he did. It is about time someone spoke up when they hear something that the President said that is untrue. This country was founded on the principal of free speach. He does not owe anyone a appology for bringing the fact that the President lied to the public’s attention.
Good for you Rep. Joe Wilson for having the courage to speak up!!
It strikes me first of all that this editorial does not identify the writer. Why doesn’t that surprise me. Second, twice as many people congregated at the capital yesterday as did for the “Million man March” and got little to no coverage by mainstream media. They were made up of all races, nationalities, ages and sexes. Locally, Florence had it’s third Tea Party. It was made up of everyday, law abiding, hard working, god fearing, America loving people who have never done more than cast their votes in the past. Yet because of the extreme radical actions of our current administration, they have felt compelled to let their voices be heard. This should be a huge story. History is being made. BUT, our local media chose not to cover this or the last Tea Party. As “TrueAmerican” stated, your decisions of what to print and report on show your left leaning bias. What a shame that today’s media is no longer here for the good of this GREAT country, but only for the support of it’s own political bias. If I am wrong, then show up the next regular citizens get together to show their love of country. Otherwise, I will conclude that our local media believes that the afore mentioned group of people are just angry right wing radical mobsters as the liberals in our government have labeled us. I would suggest that in the state of SC that would not be in your best interest.
Angelswalk…unbiased is the key word.
“I am NOT ashamed of anyone who stands up for what THEY believe in.“
But yet, you just bashed several for their opinions and the editorial boards opinion, which differ from yours, and demanded a public apology from them.
To the writer/writers of this editorial. Is it really wise, with your revenue streams at record lows, to publish this editorial that is leaning so far left? What happened to being somewhat unbiased? Are you willing to lose customers and advertisers that are offended, like I am, by your clear predjudice? You owe the majority of your readers a public apology as the majority would not be in your corner over this editorial. If one does not get issued, you might just find that your grassroots subscribers and advertisers may vanish. Can you afford that? The MSM sold America out during this last election. Are you doing a copycat scenerio and selling out the good people of this area as well?
I am NOT ashamed of anyone who stands up for what THEY believe in. Joe Wilson was not afraid and he had every right to speak what was on his mind. I applaud him. We need more people to stand up against this administration. They are leading us down a path to no return.
To those of you that insist upon calling everyone a redneck when your opinion difers…..grow up and come back when your educational levels surpass your stupidity.
Rep. Wilson should be commended for his actions. He is doing exactly what a politician is supposed to do, and that’s represent his constituency and try to do what’s right for the citizens of this country. It is unfortunate that he has to behave this way to make a point, but apparently that’s what it has come down to these days. The president claims to be open to ideas, yet I have not heard him respond to any of the very legitimate, and much cheaper alternatives to his plan. He just keeps making the same old “We need change NOW!“ speech.
Not enough are staying away. Including you. The constant bashing of the native people of SC gets louder every year. Fact is, there is no way the herd fleeing from the paradise of the north could be slowed down, much less stopped. You are wearing out your welcome. Bye.
no wonder people are staying away from SC.
Even though I believe the office of the President deserves respect, I fully understand Wilson’s frustration. He should have saved it for behind the scenes, not for the world to see. Also, I think it must be tough being expected to follow and support someone with so little experience. The article makes it sound like Wilson has more experience to know what is best for us than Obama.
I agree with what rob said, “cuz when you get ‘em on one point they’ll try to turn it into something else, ain’t that right”
I don’t always agree with you, Lisa, here I do. You hold your own well sometimes!
Don’t let them intimidate you!
“Let us know results from intensive care unit.“ If that happens you better let us know how it happened and turns out, not too sure about that one.
