Keep in mind the dangers of seasonal flu
Published: November 4, 2009
Currently, Flu vaccines are being distributed throughout the country, including vaccinations for the troublesome strain of H1N1.
According to scdhec.gov, based on previous years data, it is estimated that ten percent of the South Carolina population (about 400,000) will have influenza by the end of the season.
Thousands of people die each year from complications with seasonal flu, making prevention an important factor along with seeking immediate treatment.
Flu vaccines can be found through contacting private healthcare providers, local pharmacies and DHEC vaccine clinics.
Among those urged to seek vaccinations are school age children, people age 50 and older and those suffering from chronic medical conditions like asthma, diabetes and lung disease.
Recognize the urgent warning signs and seek medical attention. The CDC says South Carolina is one of 37 states reporting widespread flu activity this month with 456 hospitalizations and 16 deaths associated with the flu.
Take precautionary measures to help remain healthy. Washing hands, staying home when feeling sick are just a couple of steps to stay ahead, also visit the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control for more tips.
