EDITORIAL: Event merged quaint, cool

Last week, the town of Hemingway was treated to a classic piece of Americana, with a few modern twists. The Hemingway High School Homecoming parade and festivities were pure joy, plain and simple. The parade captured the nostalgia of old time parades, marching bands, home town football teams, dancing tykes and even come appearances from local political figures. It had it all. With charming downtown Hemingway as the backdrop, it was as if those in attendance were transported to a bygone era. The twist came with the fact that nobody in any bygone era had marching bands that could rock it out, little kids who broke it down in the middle of main and hair like what was on the back of that cosmetology pick-up truck. It was Mayberry with soul, funk, groove or whatever other edge you could assign to it. There was charm and there was quaintness, but there was cool. And the fun didn’t stop at the parade, when game time rolled around there was the same feeling of good, wholesome family fun but with just enough attitude that you could nod your head with the rhythm of the Benedict College Marching Tigers and watch one heck of a football team deliver a dominating performance.
No matter how you look at it, Hemingway Homecoming was fun. One-hundred percent, fun. Kudos to everyone who was involved in its planning, marched in the parade and attended the football game. Now, let’s get ready for that Christmas parade…
