Spending money on a gym membership might not work for many families right now, but there’s a new alternative opening soon. The new Claire Chapin Epps Family YMCA is set to open in about two weeks.

News 13 took a tour today for an update on the progress. The new YMCA is most definitely a major step forward for the community and it’s “Y” experience. The new 7.5 million dollar center will offer dozens of activities and programs including leagues, tournaments, an indoor track and a swimming pool, sauna, fitness facility, basketball and many other sports.
Renee Repik and her son Timmy took the tour Friday. Repik said she can’t wait to sign-up her kids for swimming lessons.  “The one really exciting thing to me is that all this is under one building,” said Repik. “You don’t have to go to Surfside to do soccer or t-ball and then go to another location to do a different activity.“

The fundraising efforts took five years from a combination of community donors with construction lasted a little more than a year.  The new building will also add jobs to the area. The “Y” plans to hire close to 70 new people, including fitness instructors, front desk workers and lifeguards.

“When you take into consideration from my perspective, joining a gym for one person could be about 40-50 dollars a month, the family membership here is $75 a month,” said Repik. “So, my family of five can come her and use all the facilities for not that much more than what my husband pays for a gym membership.“  The “Y” will also not require members to sign a year-long contract when you join.

“We do expect a membership increase,” said Angel Rabon, Membership and Marketing Director. “We’ve actually seen over the last couple of weeks with some membership drives we’ve done, we’ve sold more memberships in the past month then we did all last year.“

The “Y” is hosting tours up until the doors open the first week of October.  Call to schedule a tour.
