Local family of 11 moves into a new home
A local family gets a hand-up, in the form of a new home. A local family, truly down on its luck received an answer to their prayers. In this economy, a spark of hope is what everybody is looking for. That spark came to fruition this week for a family with nine children.
A woman contacted us asking for help, just completely out of ideas. The family lived in Florence but worked and took their children to a charter school along the Grand Strand.
Back in April the family lost everything in an RV fire and that’s when everything changed. They were in immediate need for a home and asked for our help. Fortunately, I knew of just the person to help.
Move in day was a happy day for the Lacey family. When Samantha Taylor and her husband Kevin Lacey called, they had nowhere else to take their nine children.
Their home in Florence was vandalized while they were staying in a motel after the RV fire. They were living in a rental home, but unable to pay rent due to a lack of work. Taylor said the landlord forced them out. “We had to move out of our temporary house because they put a long-term renter in there,” said Taylor. “We didn’t have any money to really go anywhere cause a lack of work and not having a good vehicle.“
Taylor said due to the age of her children, traditional charities couldn’t offer anything except food, something they said they don’t need and wouldn’t want to take from another needy person. That’s where David Combs comes into the picture. He contacted us a few weeks prior offering help to another family. That family didn’t contact him again. So, within the hour, Taylor’s family had a new home.
“There are a lot of needy families out there that need the help and a lot of people that can help,” said Combs. “I think if they’ll just look in their hearts, like once a year, there’s a lot of people, especially in the recession that need it.” And better yet, Combs said the family can live rent free for four months so they can have the time to get back on their feet.
Taylor and Lacey operated a charity of their own for the needy a few years ago, never expecting to one day need the same type of help, but they continue to give whatever they can, even now. “We’re hoping that other people will see our story and know that there are other families that can’t be helped by the regular agencies,” said Taylor. “Maybe other people like Mr. David will come forward when they see a family in need and help them out the way he has for us.“
This family works everyday wherever they can were not asking for a handout, simply a little help. There are so many of these same stories across the country now, more than in decades.
More than 10 million Americans are out of work due to the recession. Fall projections point to an increase in unemployment in South Carolina.
