Complaints against Pools Plus
Consumer Alert: Swimming Pools
Consumer Alert: Swimming PoolsIt’s no secret many of you like to be outside, and swimming pools are a big part of the lifestyle. Several people contacted News 13 with issues concerning Pools Plus along the 17 by-pass in Myrtle Beach. They claim the company did not properly complete the work they hired them to do. I sat down with them to get their side of the story.
Bobby and Karen Bryant said they hired Pools Plus in March of this year. They say after several months their pool was finally completed and were waiting on a heater, but were given several different reasons why it was not delivered by Pools Plus owner, Murray Willitts. “That went on for a few weeks until I lost my patience and went down and confronted him and he told me that I would be in the next week,” said Bryant. “Well the next week came and we never got the heater, still don’t have the heater. I had to purchase a heater from someone else.“ Bryant said he’s out right at $3000 dollars and plans to file a civil suit.
Richard Streeter said he paid Pools Plus $3200 for a pool heater in June, but owner Murray Willitts told him he just didn’t have the money to provide it. “They kept telling me, oh it’s not in, got delayed, it came in broken, they had to bring it back,” said Streeter. “Finally in August I talked to the owner Murray and he gave me a letter guaranteeing me by the fourth of September I’d have a heater installed.“
Streeter filed a complaint with the Horry County Police Department. Willitts was arrested Wednesday on breach of trust with fraudulent intent. He posted bail. Mr. Streeter said the day before Willitts arrest, Pools Plus mailed, what he said is a partial refund Monday. And a heater was dropped off at his home Tuesday. Streeter said he wished things went better and hopes nobody else has to go through the same ordeal.
Suzanne Barry said she bought a pool in April. She said it’s still unfinished. She claimed her original contract was for $31,000 dollars, but after paying another $19,000 dollars for an additional concrete order. Willitts said he would need another $13,000 dollars so she confronted Willitts “We’re in excess of 48k at this point, I’m not paying you any more money,” Barry told Willitts. “So he said, we ran over on concrete for your stairs and deck, it’s on your property, you have to pay for it.“ Barry is still waiting for a resolution at this time.
News 13 spoke with Murray Willitts by phone several times. He sais his business is suffering due to the economy. He cancelled the scheduled meeting so we’ll speak with him next week and follow-up on the story.
