A Dillon woman came home from church Wednesday night to find her dog dead in the oven, according to Dillon Police Sgt. James Hayes.
Hayes says when Bonnie Bowens got home that night, she noticed her front door kicked in. She did not go inside the home; instead, she called police. Hayes says police got that call around 10 p.m. Wednesday.
When investigators arrived, they say they found her house broken into and vandalized.
While looking around her home, investigators say they noticed a chair propped against her oven door. Police were shocked at what they found inside.
They say someone put Bowens’ dog in the oven, turned the oven on, and the dog was dead when they opened the door.
Bowens told News13 she had her female pug, “Penny”, for about two-and-a-half months before she died Wednesday night.
“This is the first dog I have ever had,“ Bowens said, “And it hurt me to my heart somebody did that to me, and burnt my dog up in the stove…I still cries and thinks about it.“
Police say this happened at 1205 Owen Street in Dillon.
“This is the first case I ever heard of like this that happened in Dillon,” Hayes said.
Investigators say the intruder or intruders ransacked Bowens’ home. A number of items from her drawers were scattered around the home, according to police.
They do no have any suspects at this time.
“That’s what we’re trying to figure out,“ Hayes says, “What it is, gang-related or maybe somebody just got a vengeance against her and we don’t know right at this moment.“
Police say the person or persons responsible for this crime will face first-degree burglary and cruelty to animal charges.

Ms. Bowens,
Im am deeply sorry for the loss of your beloved family pet. This was such a tragic thing to have happen. My blessings go out to you and your family. I deeply hope they catch the person or people who commited this unthinkable act of crulty.
my deepest regrets,
Mariah D.
Ms. Bowens,
I am so sorry for your loss. I DO hope this person or persons are found no matter the age, they should be treated the same way this little dog was treated. I can only imagine the horror this little fellow went through before he took his last breath.
I am involved with our local animal shelter and sure we can locate a pet for you but very hesitant in letting you have one in the area in which you live in case the same thing happens again.
It takes a truly SICK individual to do something like this to a helpless creature.
Please try to think of ANYONE that had a grudge against you or your dog. It would not pay for me to meet this person that did this…trust me, I care deeply for animals!!! No matter how a person treats an animal, he always wags his tail to greet you.
Again, I am so sorry for what happened to you, but glad you were not home as it could have been even worse for you.
sincerly, shd
oh my god WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have heard of some stupid things but this is just about the craziest thing ever. how cruel can one be. WHOEVER DID THIS IS ONE SICK, TWISTED FREAK!!!
According to Dr. Billy Graham, dogs do go to Heaven. The Lord knows who did this awful thing and will deal with them accordingly. He has a oven waiting like none other unless he repents and changes his ways.
When they catch him why don’t they just put his sorry butt in an oven and turn it on high.
This person deserves to be stoned to death like in the old days!
There is no excuse for such a horrible crime - I hope they find them, and run over them with the car while in pursuit.
Some people are just sick. Its cases like this that makes me wish that the laws for animal cruelty were more like the laws on harming a human life. Animals are just like people, in fact the are like babies/small children because they cant defend themselves. I hope that the person who ever did this gets caught, they are a coward for doing what they did. My heart goes out to Ms.Bowens..
I really really hope they catch the person responsible for thats dogs pain as well as the owner. If it were my dog i would dedicate my life to tracking that animal down and see to it personally that he get dealt with. Just like “hannahs mom” my dogs are like my children…. There is a special place in he!! for whoever did this.
I hope they give a hefty sentence to whomever did this to this poor lady. It is bad enough to steal from her or ransack her home, but to kill her dog is just unbelievably cruel.
I think TV 13 needs to collect some money to buy her a new stove. I’m sure seeing that stove is a daily reminder of the horrible death of her pet. I’m sure she doesn’t have the money to replace it.
Her pet will not be so easy to replace. Hopefully after that sicko is captured and put in jail and when her heart is healed maybe she can love another little dog.
I would suggest a Rottweiler. She seems to need a good guard dog as well as a sweet pet. Good luck getting a dog like that in an oven!
To Bonnie Bowens:
I am so sorry for the loss of your pet. Our pets are members of our families and it is sad enough when a pet passes away, but this heinous act is heart wrenching. This is terribly sad.
