Women arrested in Lamar Sunday alcohol sales investigation

Deputies arrested two Lamar women during an investigation of a Lamar business believed to be conducting Sunday alcohol sales illegally, Darlington County Sheriff’s Capt. Andy Locklair said.

Sandy Renee Harrell, 40, of 449 Pine St., is charged with selling alcohol illegally on Sunday, Darlington County Detention Center booking reports show.

Wannette A. Poarch, 39, of the same address, is charged with interfering with an investigation.

It happened Sunday at Amerson’s Grocery where deputies were conducting the investigation. Locklair said that’s when Poarch confronted the deputies and started “raising sand and hollering.” Deputies tried to search the business, but she got in their way and kept interfering.

Deputies told people on the scene to stay where they were so they could be questioned, but Locklair said Poarch kept telling them to leave.

The business has a license to sell alcohol, but it’s illegal to sell it on Sundays, Locklair said.

Both women were arrested Sunday. Harrell was released Monday and fined $250, while Poarch was released Monday on a $500 bond.

Richard,

I guess all those references to “the creator” in the Declaration of Independence were just coincidence right?

As far as the blue laws go, I too find them ridiculous.  But I also find the seatbelt law to be stupid, the helmet law for motorcycles to be idiotic, and think that speed limits are entirely too low.

scarecrow457,

You haven’t read much history have you? Although this discussion has gotten way off track, I can’t resist commenting on your statement. Let’s see waht some of thos “God fearing people” who founded this country had to say:

“The government of the United States is not in any sense founded upon the Christian religion”—John Adams

“I have examined all the known superstitions of the world, and I do not find in our particular superstition of Christianity one redeeming feature. They are all alike founded on fables and mythology. Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned. What has been the effect of this coercion? To make one half the world fools and the other half hypocrites; to support roguery and error all over the earth.“—Thomas Jefferson

I have found Christian dogma unintelligible. Early in life, I absented myself from Christian assemblies.“—Benjamin Franklin

Zman you are doing a good job sticking up for the right. The truth cannot be forever denied. This nation was founded on Christian principles by God fearing people. Not by a muslim or even by a jew. Shelton brought that nonsense up, so the answer was mandatory. Thankfully both the above were missing during the formation of the country. Any jack leg can come along later and lay a claim to fame that does not exist. As for his saying “i am a Christian, BUT”, that is the same line used by those who advocate cutting and running in the face of an enemy. Neither a Christian or a Patriot .

I see this as a battle between those who do not believe our law officers have authority and those who depend on that authority for their safety and protection of their property. I prefer that our government delegate authority to the police officers, fire firefighters and E.M.S. personel and the ones that need a drink so bad will just have to suffer. I would not bet that lawbreakers are likely to put their life on the line for someone who would spit in the face of their efforts. These same folks would cry the blues for sure if the cops did not respond when they were being robbed for instance.

If one does not like the no left turn laws then campaign, get a consensus and try to the change the law. If the majority of the people do not see it their way then get over it or get a ride out of town. That’s the way it works and giving the cops a hard time for doing their duty does not contribute to the pursuit of peace and happiness. ;^)

Actually the article was about a woman selling alcohol on Sunday and another woman verbally assalting police officers and getting in the way of their investigation.

The arguement IS NOT about drinking on Sunday….it’s about alcohol SALES on Sunday.

If people want to drink on Sunday, so be it…it’s done all the time…and you’re not telling me that God fearing folk don’t drink on Sunday. If you believe that, I can sell you a bridge in Brooklyn.

Drive by one of the Micky Finn stores some time and see the jammed parking lot on a late Saturday afternoon. I am sure they are not there to buy a Coke for their Sunday afternoon of football game festivites.

These people broke the current law and sold alcohol on Sunday…which is wrong. These blue laws are so archaic it is pathetic.

It is not the drink that the Lord warns us about but the potential of excessive drinking to separate us from Him.

We all need a day of rest and Sunday is the traditional day. In my opinion, even the cronic drunk should take advantage of this day and ‘Give it a rest!‘.

Do they really think that because they dont allow sunday alcohol sales its ok with the lord on the other 6 days?? if they wanted to really do whats right they would ban it outright! Its ok to drink as much as you want on sunday! why not buy it too??
