The U.S. Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration has announced an $850,000 investment to the Northeastern Technical College and Northeastern Technical College Area Commission in Cheraw.

The investment will help build training facilities for an associate nursing program and is expected to create more than 200 jobs and generate $27.3 million in private investment.

“This EDA investment will provide on-going training for workers in the healthcare and nursing fields to address a severe need for better trained medical staff in this rural area,” Deputy Assistant Secretary and Chief Operating Officer Benjamin Erulkar, said in a press release issued Wednesday.

EDA serves as a venture capital resource to meet the economic development needs of distressed communities throughout the United States. Its mission is to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy.
