Teach & Inspire information sessions offered
The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) has been preparing and certifying teachers in South Carolina since 2007 and this fall begins offering teaching certification scholarship opportunities in the state through its Teach & Inspire program.
ABCTE will hold 15 in-person information sessions throughout South Carolina during October and early November, providing more information on the scholarship program and details on how anyone interested can apply.
Funded by a U.S. Department of Education Transition to Teaching grant, ABCTE’s Teach & Inspire Scholarship program recruits and prepares highly qualified individuals, providing accepted participants with a full scholarship toward ABCTE certification. Once ABCTE certification is obtained, Teach & Inspire candidates are eligible for a $1,000 stipend for completing classroom observations.
Participants must make a three-year commitment to teach in a high-need subject and school in South Carolina. The program is set to begin working with 15 partner school districts throughout the state. Districts in Florida and Mississippi also participate in the Teach & Inspire program.
Candidates for ABCTE certification must hold a bachelor’s degree in any subject area and pass a background check, an examination in teaching knowledge and an examination in the subject area they want to teach. Candidates are not required to take additional college courses in order to earn a teaching certificate. ABCTE offers certification in South Carolina for grades 9-12 in English, math, general science, biology, physics and chemistry.
