McCormick Elementary School fifth grader Ki’Yahn Leach has been accepted into the South Carolina Elementary Honors Choir.
Leach is the son of Johnica Leach of Mullins. He participates in chorus and praise dancing classes in Marion School District Two’s after school arts program called “APPLE”.
Leach is also a member of his youth choir at the House of God Zion Church.
Over 240 students from across the state qualified for the opportunity.
Students will rehearse in Charleston, at the Music Educators’ Conference in February. The choir will practice for two days and then participate in an evening concert.
When asked how he felt upon hearing the news, Leach was very gracious.
“While I’m excited to have this opportunity, I also must give my fellow students who tried out much respect,” he said. “We all worked very hard and this chance could have just as easily gone to someone else in our group,” he added.
Leach utilizes a lesson he learned at home. “My mother taught me it is nice to win but a true sign of character is how you behave whether you win or not.”
