Since the South Carolina Attorney General's Office began threatening inappropriate activities on Craigslist with prosecution, that office has received a threat of its own in the form of a lawsuit,...South Carolina’s top prosecutor said he’ll continue to push Craigslist to remove all sex-related ads from its web site.
Attorney General Henry McMaster said the announcement Craigslist would replace its “erotic services” category with one listing “adult services” is not enough.
McMaster has given Craigslist until Monday to take down all sex-related ads from its South Carolina sites, or face possible prosecution.
Since the A.G.‘s office began threatening inappropriate activities on craigslist with prosecution, they received a threat of their own in the form of a lawsuit.
This past week the A.G.’s office received a lawsuit and notified all 16 solicitors across the state because they were also included.
Twelfth Circuit Solicitor Ed Clements said an attorney in Charleston filed the suit, and even though the solicitors made no statements regarding craigslist they are also mentioned in the lawsuit because they prosecute.
“It seems like it was something that was made for the media, and here I am before a camera now. Some sharp lawyer in Charleston decided he was gonna make a lot of money by suing all of the solicitors and we don’t like getting sued,“ Clements said.
In these tough economic times with increasingly high crime rates, Clements said it’s time and money that can only afford to be spent fighting crime not lawsuits.
He also told News13 he’s hoping the case will be dismissed or if not that, get the solicitors excused as defendants.
