The Pee Dee Community Action Partnership Transitional Shelter will have an open house for its women’s dorm at 10 a.m. Thursday at the shelter, 411 S. Jarrott St., Florence.
The Rev. Dr. Mack T. Hines, who has been the shelter’s director for more than 20 years, said the shelter is the oldest and most comprehensive in the Pee Dee. Its goal is to provide support services to help its residents become self-sufficient. Among the services offered are transportation, schooling and medical assistance.
In the past, the shelter could only accomodate 11 beds for men with seven bedrooms for women, including their children. The women’s dorm has expanded to five bedrooms downstairs and four bedrooms upstairs with adequate closet space.
The shelter’s men’s dorm and administrative offices reopened in August 2008 after a two-year hiatus caused by a fire.
