Williard Ray Dement Jr., 27, was arrested a second time after he manage to escape from a police car while handcuffed, he said.
The incident happened about 6 p.m. at the Magnolia Mall when police received a call about a suspicious person.
Officers soon discovered the man was wanted in North Carolina for receiving stolen goods. The suspect’s hands were cuffed behind his back in the patrol car, but he manage to contort his body to the point where his hands were in front.
“Some people can do that if they are flexible,” Raines said.
The arresting officer noticed and pulled the car over to readjust the handcuffs, but the suspect broke away and fled.
Police searched an area near the old Wal-Mart and called in canines to track the suspect.
Canine officer Tracker picked up the suspect’s scent and found him in a drainage ditch, still handcuffed with his nose sticking out, Raines said. “It’s something you see in Rambo. ... It didn’t work, and he was arrested.”
Dement was taken to the Florence County Detention Center in Effingham where he awaits a bond hearing.

My point was that I don’t care what you do with your computer, life, etc. I was just “respectfully suggesting” some other options. I don’t really remember posters names unless I have direct interactions with them so no, I don’t know your positions on Ed. And this interchange seems to be going in the opposite direction than I expected. I have no opposition to what you posted. You made valid points and I respect them. You didn’t elaborate on your initial message so I didn’t understand your reasoning for bringing up his name. No harm no foul.
Who is posting ANTI Ed messages?
Anyone who reads my posts know that I think Ed could be a really good councilman if he would lose the racism and thinking he is above the laws.
Why can’t Ed take a little constructive criticism?
He should know there are people out here who could live with him if he just seemed to have some real values and presented them.
There is so much constructive that could be done if he just loses his inferiority complex thinking all whites hate all blacks because that is far from the truth for most of us.
So, now you question ME about girls thongs.
Well I wouldn’t know, I don’t look because yes that is nasty too.
Girls have been taught that is the way guys like to see them.
Isn’t that sickening?
People need to be taught, but they won’t all learn.
And really, to take a page from your book, that is for another discussion later.
It doesn’t really matter (as far as you are concerned) what I do with my conputer.
I can be productive any way and with any means I choose. As long as I am productive.
In case you can’t tell, I am one of the ones who deplore having dirt swept under the rug.
I have no doubt that Ed makes ignorant statements, but people need to understand the definition of racist. That’s part of the problem. Ed and others throw this term around without understanding the meaning of the word. Doing that diminishes it’s effectiveness of the word.
Now I’m not telling you what not to say. I only gave you a bit of information to use as you see fit. There was no way for you to misconstue the meaning of my words.
I don’t like the way Ed handles himself just like everyone else but THIS is not an effective way to do something about it.
As far as his constituents wearing pants baggin and saggin and no shoe strings, it’s called culture. I never hear mention of white women walking through the mall with whale tails (thong panties showing). So why single out blacks…er, his constituents?
Angel, You can keep Ed’s name going as long as you want, and I’m only letting you know that it’s only going to solidify his base. But you can also shut down your computer and step outside to really do something about it. Otherwise, you’ll be posting anti-Ed messages until one of your goes home to glory.
When crime happens, black or white, Peachtree, People now will automatically think of Ed Robinson. He says, with all his authority, that Florence needs no help from more law enforcement.
Why Peachtree, should we hear you and forget his arrogance, the level of danger he is not trying to control? But seems at times to condone because that is just the way it is. He is doing so much to hold Florence back by crying his racism. Wouldn’t you rather broach that subject? Wouldnt you rather see a conclusion to that rather than his racism being spewed constantly?
I stated in the past, Ed Robinson could be somebody if he thought the laws applied to him also and would get off the racism kick. Ed Robinson could do alot and help in beneficial ways that would help our city and downtown area, if he would lose the racism.
Where have you been that you think you can tell us not to bring him up? That is my God-given right if I feel he is in any way holding my city back.
Maybe he should teach his constituents and their children that the pants off the A** and shoes with no strings is prison wear! Maybe instead of him constantly crying racism or things like, I cant make that suggestion, if I do no one will back it because it came from me, yes, maybe if he would act like he is not an instigator, then articles like this could get through without his name being mentioned.
Wow, Ed Robinson couldn’t escape this story. Here’s a nugget…if black people feel that he’s being singled out unfairly, he riles up white folks emotions, and he goes against the grain of the mainstream, he will retain his seat until he dies. If the story doesn’t involve Ed, don’t bring him up. You’re being counterproductive when you do.
They should just drive a stob in the ground on the edge of that ditch and tie him to it and leave him there for a month!
You all do realize Tracker doesn’t work alone, right? The hiding in the ditch trick worked just fine right up until he was caught. That makes the suspect both wet and stupid. He’s lucky Mr. No-shoulders didn’t get a piece of him.
This man was trying on glasses where my daughter works, she said, LOL, they wouldn’t have helped him escape. If he had harmed my daughter I would have been out looking myself!
The previous week a woman had a gun pulled on her at the same location. My question, is there security around these malls? I thought there was, and security patrol won’t stop this, but it could help the employees and patrons feel safer maybe.
People don’t care who they hurt or traumatize anymore, that is so obvious.
BUT, Ed doesn’t think we need help.
If it hadn’t been for Tracker (the dog) he would have gotten away!
He tried…LOL.
