Man sentenced to nine years in jail for robbery

A Mount Croghan man was sentenced to nine years in jail in connection with a May 2008 robbery at a Pageland video rental store, Assistant 4th Circuit Solicitor Adam Foard said in a press release issued Wednesday.

Jerry Lamont Hubbard was convicted Tuesday of strong armed robbery and was sentenced by 4th Circuit Court Judge Paul M. Burch after the solicitor’s office recommended a 10-year sentence.

Witnesses said Hubbard entered the store brandishing a shotgun. During the subsequent investigation by Pageland police, the weapon was found abandoned nearby.

Police received a tip that led them to Hubbard, who later confessed to the crime, Foard said. 

“Hubbard, a career criminal, invaded this business and placed the clerk in imminent harm,” Foard said. “While he had no record of a crime of this magnitude and the amount of property stolen was minor, that in no way means this case is any less serious. A prison term is most appropriate in case of this nature.”

Strong armed robbery is classified as a felony. Hubbard will serve his time at a facility designated by the S.C. Department of Corrections, Foard said.
