Marlboro school district names Roberson new superintendent
Marlboro County School District Board of Education has named Dr. Frank G. Roberson of North Augusta its new superintendent during a special called meeting Wednesday.
Members of the district’s board of education met in executive session for two hours to discuss the superintendent candidates.
Once back in open session, board members approved a motion to enter into contract negoiations with Roberson, president and educational consultant/evaluator for the Roberson Group, an education improvement group that works to improve schools and school leadership in poor performing schools and districts in South Carolina and Georgia.
Board Chairman John McInnis was the only board member to vote against the motion.
McInnis said his only issue with that motion was that Roberson’s family was not in favor of moving to the district, although Roberson himself would move.
Other than that, McInnis said he agrees with the decision and is looking forward to working with the new superintendent.
Marlboro County’s search for a new superintendent began after the board voted to terminate the district’s contract with Alisa Goodman.
The board agreed to a contract buyout of more than $400,000 and appointed Tommy Clark, assistant superintendent of secondary education, to serve as the district’s interim superintendent.
Roberson, along with two other finalists, were named to lead the district.
Other finalists were D. Renee Mathews of Sumter, chief academic officer for Richland County School District 1, and Dr. Thomas Alexander Sparks of Batesburg-Leesville, assistant superintendent for instruction in Lexington School District 3.
Forty applications were received by the S.C. School Boards Association, the organization hired to conduct the search.
Six semi-finalists were selected before the board narrowed the candidates down to three. Each of the three finalists participated in interviews with various levels of the district administration, principals, teachers and the community in addition to the school board.
The community had the opportunity to meet with each finalist through three days of community forums.

As a parent in the Aiken District, I’ve known Dr. Frank Roberson for many years and hold him in high regard. He was well thought of by teachers. You’re lucky to get him. By the way, his family doesn’t live in another state, we’re part of SC down here.
Hmm. Let’s get this straight. A new superintendent has been hired to oversee Marlboro Schools systems. His family WILL NOT move to Marlboro County but yet the school board hired him anyway! There is something wrong here! Does that mean that the people of Marlboro will once again ‘foot the bill’ by paying for his living expenses in addition to paying his salary so he can maintain his household in another state. Once again, Marlboro citizens are getting the “short end of the stick”.
