Deputies arrest man in vehicle break-ins
Marion County Sheriff Mark Richardson said Marvin K. Chestnut is charged with six counts of larceny and breaking into a motor vehicle. Richardson said deputies made Chestnut’s arrest after investigating a series of vehicle burglaries at local churches during a recent weekend. On Jan. 26, Richardson said his deputies were searching for a suspect after four vehicles were broken into at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and three at Grace Community Church.
“Mostly credit cards and women’s purses were taken,” Richardson said. The previous day, Conway Police arrested and charged Chestnut with a string of automobile break-ins from over the weekend, according to Conway Police spokeswoman, Catina Hipp.
Chestnut faces seven counts of breaking into vehicles and one count of illegally disposing of an abandoned vehicle, according to court records. Chestnut had previously been charged by Horry County authorities with burglary, forgery, grand larceny and was sentenced to three years in prison and two years probation, according that county’s court records.
In September 2004, Chestnut pleaded guilty to third degree burglary charges and served a four year prison sentence. In 2007, Chestnut pleaded guilty to Conway Police charges of breaking into motor vehicles, grand larceny, and receiving stolen goods. A judge sentenced Chestnut to 18 months probation, according to county court records.
Chestnut picked up his third offense driving under suspension and driving on the wrong side of the road charges in October 2008. In January, he was arrested and charged with a probation violation and freed from jail on a $2,000 fine, according to jail records.
Chestnut was scheduled to end his probation in August 2009, but a circuit court judge will decide if his probation will be revoked and if he will be sent back to prison to finish a five year sentence.
