Authorities have called off the hunt for two men near Cades and hope to confirm the suspect’s identities and obtain warrants, Clarendon County Sheriff Randy Garrett said.
Sheriff’s deputies from Clarendon, Florence and Williamsburg counties were in Cades on Friday evening as they sought two men who led them on a chase in a van stolen in Georgia, Garrett said.
The search had been called off by 7:30 p.m.
The chase began about 4 p.m. Friday, when a Clarendon County deputy tried to pull the driver of the stolen van over for speeding on S.C. 527 at the Williamsburg-Clarendon county line, Garrett said.
The men, after taking a route that brought them through the intersection of Main Street and Ron McNair Boulevard in Lake City, traveled south and abandoned the vehicle before running into the woods near U.S. 52 and S.C. 512. There, law enforcement officers set up a perimeter.
One man remained in the woods, while the other stole a pickup idling outside a house in Cades, Garrett said. Authorities later recovered the pickup in Georgetown County, he said.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office brought in its K-9 tracking team to help hunt the two men, and a State Law Enforcement Division sent a helicopter to assist with the search, Garrett said.
The man in the stolen pickup nearly struck a deputy with the vehicle, Garrett said. The deputy, who had been running in pursuit of the man, fired two shots at the man as he drove away, Garrett said.
The sheriff said he doesn’t think the bullets struck the man in the pickup.
Although the sheriff said he doesn’t know the men’s identities, he said there’s reason to think they’ve committed burglaries at homes as well as thefts of all-terrain vehicles and other items.
Anybody with information regarding the subjects’ whereabouts should call the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office at (803) 435-4414 or Crime Stoppers of the Pee Dee at (866) 369-8477 (TIPS). Callers do not have to reveal their identities.

Yeah, let’s mount shotguns into the grills of law enforcement vehicles. Nevermind that the roadways are riddles with potholes and could make a seemingly perfect shot go awry. The only people around police chases are criminals anyway.
Sarcasm off.
Oldbiker is right on about the uncalled for remark about law enforcement. Their hands are often tied by [usually federal] BS rules of engagement thought up by some doddering old fool on the high court in DC. The police cruiser needs a striker type 12 gauge shotgun mounted in the grill area and authority to use it once proper warnings have been given by police in pursuit. Shoot the vehicle out from under their butts. Lets end the OJ type pursuit.
sorry i cant spell-have not had no sleep since i got off this morning.what i meant was-let’s go fcso and get these guys and put them where they belong for a long time….JAIL
just realized they came by our house chasing the guys, were going so fast i thank god no one pulled out in front of them.i thought that it was just cops but now know it was the guys too.let;s go kenny nad catch them and out them where they belong for alond time….JAIL
I just love that comment law enforcement sucks. They take applications every day at the LEC. I know what officers make in the surrounding counties, and it isn’t enough to put their lives on the line every shift. Some of the officers involved were my friends and they did what they could. I suggest if you can do better, join the force
Just remember all comments posted are not totally true, people like to blow things up but YES our law enforcement sucks. I saw 4 dodge cop cars and 7 deputy cars chasing this gray van and they could not stop it. What is that? I mean please tell me why 11 police cars couldn’t stop a minivan before it drove into down town Lake City and hit Hwy 52 ending up in Cades. It’s only by the grace of God that someone wasn’t killed by the crazy driver of that van. The driver of the van appeared to be a husky black male. But he was driving very fast so I didn’t get a clear look.
Why can’t someone give us a better description of these men or at least tell us what kind of vehicle to be on the lookout for?
where i work at we were told by someone that they men rob a bank in turbeville. im not sure how true that is…that is ashamed that the boy was pushed down and his truck stolen. that man could have easily kill that poor boy and another question i wonder who is going to pay for the truck that is now damaged and also if someone is hurt or say killed with all this then who is going to be responsible for that. this is world is so cruel and unsafe anymore. u cant go anywhere or do anything without feeling like your life is in danger and its even more ashamed that we cant even be in our home or yard any more and feel safe….
I live in Cades and they don’t have this many cops around for a bank robbery. The owner of the trucks son was pushed to the ground IN HIS YARD then a black male jumped into the truck and tried to steal it, police shot up the truck and he still got away in the truck, what were they aiming for - air? These people done something aside from steal a van! We have the right to know, it is our lives at risk too!
