  • The town of Society Hill and the Society Hill Lion’s Club’s second annual Sept. 11 observance begins at 8 a.m. at Society Hill’s Memorial Park with First Responder sirens. The Darlington High School ROTC unit will present the colors, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, which will be led by Master of Ceremonies Cecil Chandler of WBTW News13’s “Cecil’s World.” After the pledge and opening prayer, Jay Black of Darlington will sing “God Bless America.” State Sen. Gerald Malloy and state Rep. Denny Neilson will be the guest speakers. Darlington County, Harris Creek of Chesterfield County and Society Hill fire department personnel will be on hand, as well as personnel from the Society Hill Police Department and the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office. The event, coordinated by Society Hill Lion’s Club President Jean Funderburk, will close with a prayer followed by light refreshments in the park.
  • The Florence Fire Department will have its annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at 9 a.m. at Station 1, 144 E. Palmetto St., Florence. For more details, call Florence Fire Marshal Ken Carr at (843) 665-3231.
  • Williamsburg Technical College will have a ceremony to commemorate Patriots Day at 9 a.m. Sept. 11 at the flagpole on the front campus. The public is invited to attend. The public also is invited to participate in a project sponsored by the college’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society to gather items to mail to soldiers stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. There will be a location near the front entrance of the college during the ceremony where items may be dropped off. Items to be contributed to send to troops may include pre-packaged individual snack foods such as nuts, trail mix, beef jerky or cookies (no chocolate); powdered drink mixes such as Kool-Aid, hot chocolate, instant coffee, Gatorade, creamer and sugar packets (no liquid); personal products such as wet wipes, sunscreen, lip balm, eye drops, foot powder, over-the-counter pain killers, vitamins; books; DVD movies; and personal written notes.   • South Darlington Rural Fire Department (Darlington County Fire District Station 5) will hold a flag dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. to honor and remember the fallen firefighters of Sept. 11. Woodmen of the World Lodge 152 will be making the presentation to the fire department, and several Darlington County dignitaries are expected to attend.
