A 26-year-old Latta man has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for credit card fraud and aggravated identity theft, U.S. Attorney W. Walter Wilkins said in a press release.

U.S. District Judge Terry L. Wooten of Florence also sentenced William Lashon Campbell, also known as Waylon Maurice Campbell, to three years probation and ordered him to pay $10,161.88 in restitution.

Campbell was employed by a local finance company and stole customers’ personal and account information. He used the stolen data to manufacture and pass counterfeit commercial checks between April and September 2007. During a search of Campbell’s residence by Latta police in November 2007, additional counterfeit checks, counterfeit identification cards and stolen credit card account numbers were retrieved.

Assistant U.S. Attorney William E. Day II of the Florence office prosecuted the case, which also was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service.

I’m not saying that people shouldn’t be punished but comparing Lance products to thousands of dollars and individuals personal information for the sentence those two received was uncalled for.  The dog must have known this person for it to be a pitbull and go with a total stranger somehow doesn’t sound right to me either, especially if it slept with you being so close to you all of the time.  Sorry for your loss.

12 years may sound harsh to some .. but to me maybe this will make others THINK before doing something so very STUPID as to take what doesn’t belong to them. I have been a victim of theft - broke into my home and stole my 4 year old pitbull who happened to sleep in the bed with me! Now saying that .. anyone who steals should be sentenced to a long time in jail ... especially if they are repeat offenders.

You know something, JLEE?  I agree with you.  I abhor what they did but 12 years in prison seems a bit harsh to me, as well.
