Dillon School District 3 Superintendent Dr. John M. Kirby Jr. recently made the final installment of a $30,000 gift to the Northeastern Technical College Foundation.
“Dr. (John) Kirby’s gift is a testimony of his dedication to our students and the college,” Northeastern Technical College President Dr. Ron Bartley said in a press release. “We are honored to have him on our Foundation Board and we look forward to the positive impact his commitment will continue to have on the students selected for this award.”
The Dr. John Kirby Scholarship at Northeastern Technical College is awarded to a Latta High School graduate or an adult student from the Latta community to assist him or her in pursuing a college degree. The award can be used either to pay tuition or to help defray the cost associated with attending college such as books.
Kirby said in a press release issued by Northeastern Technical College that he wanted to establish the scholarship because he wanted to help someone else pursue an education just like someone helped him.
Kirby is a graduate of Mullins High School and earned an Associate of Science degree from the University of South Carolina, a Bachelor of Science and a master’s degree in elementary education both from Francis Marion University. He also earned a doctorate degree in education administration from Nova Southeastern University.
Kirby’s educational career includes being a teacher, coach and administrator in the Mullins School District and a principal of Latta High School before becoming superintendent of the Latta-based school district.
