Kingstree man charged in attempted assault

Police arrested a Kingstree man they say tried to rape a 20-year-old woman at her home, Kingstree Police Chief Robert Ford said.

Shavar Conyers, 22, of 745 Red Road. is charged with assault and battery with attempt to commit criminal sexual conduct and public intoxication, Ford said.

It happened Thursday when the victim was styling a child’s hair in her home.

The victim said the suspect, who was formerly involved with the victim’s sister, got into the house and attacked her. The victim began fighting the suspect and ran to a neighbor’s home for help, Ford said. No serious injuries were reported.

Police found the suspect later that day intoxicated and unconscious a short distance from the victim’s home, the chief said.

Conyers remains in custody at the Williamsburg County Detention Centerin Kingstree on a $30,000 bond for the assault charge and a $550 cash or surety bond for the intoxication charge.
