Gas prices hold steady in Pee Dee

FLORENCE — As reports of closed and possibly hurricane damaged Gulf Coast refineries flooded in, many Pee Dee residents discovered Saturday that gasoline prices remained relatively unchanged from Friday, before Hurricane Ike made landfall.

Many gasoline stations around Florence were selling regular unleaded fuel for about 3.99 per gallon Saturday. The Exxon station at South Cashua and Celebration Blvd. sold regular unleaded fuel for $3.90.

An employee for that station said gasoline prices had not increase from the time shortly before the hurricane struck Texas.

“These people make a big deal out of nothing, you know?” he said. “It’s not going to go up.”

According to Financial Times newspaper reports, the prolonged loss of production from the Gulf of Mexico, which produces 20 percent of the country’s oil and gasoline, were sure to put upward pressure on oil prices.

The highest gasoline price recorded in Florence by the Morning News was the Sav-Way gasoline station in the city’s Five Points area. That station advertised gasoline at $4.59 for regular unleaded fuel.

While Florence County residents, no doubt, still are on the lookout for the most reasonable gasoline prices in their area, sheriff’s deputies are on the lookout for fueling stations trying to take advantage of
the uncertainty of the situation.

Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said his office has been flooded with calls from residents reporting price gouging.

So far, deputies are investigating five cases of price gouging, Boone said.

Sheriff’s deputies are riding the county looking for more cases of the crime, he said. Authorities probably won’t arrest gougers on the spot, but the cases will, however, be turned over to the S.C. Attorney General’s Office, Boone said.

It’s a good time to join a carpool. This hike is obviously a short term anomaly, but look around your workplace for interest.

Also, it’s sustainable. Visit Florence County’s planning blog (http://www.florenceco.blogspot.com) and search through the entries to find out more about County plans for sustainability and increasing residents’ quality of life.

THE RISE IN GAS PRICES ARE DIRECTLY DUE TO THE MEDIA REPORTING ON THE CHANCE OF GAS PRICES POSSIBLY GOING TO 5.00 PER GALLON. THIS CAUSED A FRENZY OF REDICULAS PANIC. I HAVENT SEEN PEOPLE RUSHING TO THE PUMPS AND FIGHTING OVER WHO GOT THERE FIRST SINCE HURRICANE HUGO HIT CHARLESTON.
IT TRULY MAKES ME WONDER WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE NOWADAYS. I WORK IN THE GAS BUSINESS AND THERE WASNT ANYTHING I COULD DO TO PREPARE FOR THIS REDICULAS DISPLAY OF CRAZY BEHAVIOR. IT IS THE MEDIA’S RESPONSIBILITY TO REPORT THE NEWS WISELY AND NOT TO CREATE PANIC UNESSASSARILY. AND THIS PAST WEEK WAS A FINE EXAMPLE OF POOR REPORTING. THE REPORTING ON FRIDAY EVE ABOUT NOT FILLING/HORDING GAS AND RUSHING TO THE PUMPS SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED ON THURSDAY, NOT AFTER THE PANIC HAD ALREADY CAUSED ENOUGH PROBLEMS AND HELPED TO RAISE GAS PRICES ABOVE 4.00 PER GALLON. I FEEL SORRY FOR THE FOLKS AT THESE STATIONS WHO HAD TO DEAL WITH THIS MAYHEM WITHOUT ANY WARNING AND THE POLICE THAT HAD TO BE CALLED TO BREAKUP FIGHTS AT THESE STATIONS. BE RESPONISIBLE…AND FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ACTED RESPONSIBLY I GIVE YOU A GRATITUDE OF THANKS.

On saturday night, there are 2 stores in Lake City that is advertising gas for $5.29 and $5.40 a gallon, this is ridiculous. This is done because most stores are already out of gas and they know everyone needs it and will pay to have it. Where does looking out for each other start and stop . Right here at the pumps it seems. You can’t get ahead in life by cheating people because eventually it will happen to you .$5.00 a gallon is only $2.00 less than what most poeple make an hour working who can afford to drive for that. Get real, how can people in government say they want more people off of welfare and have jobs when they make it hard for those who already have jobs to even get there.

Betty’s Quick stop in Hemingway is 4. 69 and right down the road is 3.99.  That makes absolutely no sense.

Lake City must think we are especially stupid in light of Hurricane Ike.  It’s bad enough that on a regular day their prices are higher than any of the surrounding towns.  But now they have the audacity to charge $4.79. a gal.  It makes me so angry that they have and will continue to get away with this, just because the owner (who happens to own most of the cities gas stations) is one of the “good old boys”.
He most likely lines the pockets of others.  I guess you have to make your own money to get in real trouble.  But Hey - it’s only my opinion.
