The Naomi Project, a transitional facility for abused women and children, will be holding a fundraiser Monday to benefit the home.

The project will be selling lunches at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 252 S. Dargan St. in Florence from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

People can choose a main dish of baked or barbecued chicken. Each dinner is served with chicken bog, green beans, a dinner roll and macaroni and cheese.

Joyce G. Ford, the executive director of the Naomi Project, said the facility has been serving families since June 2006.

“The can stay at our house for up to a year and we offer them a program to help take back their lives,” she said.

The Naomi Project is not a crisis center, but a long-term center for homeless women and children fleeing a domestically abusive relationship, Ford said.

The house is at an undisclosed Florence County location and can serve about 12 people at a time.

The project provides them with resources to better their lives.

The name of the project comes from the name of a woman mentioned in the Bible book of Ruth.

“Naomi was the one who guided Ruth to take back her life,” Ford said. “Naomi taught Ruth how to glean in the fields and she ended up owning the field because she married Boaz, who owned the field. She learn how to from Naomi.”
