FLORENCE — Francis Marion University recently tapped Julian Young to lead its Office of Alumni Affairs.

Young has served the university for nearly four years, most recently as a community relations and events coordinator in the Office of Public and Community Affairs. He replaces Kim Turbeville, who resigned to pursue other opportunities.

In this position, he will be responsible for developing and managing an effective alumni relations program to stimulate interest, build loyalty and increase involvement.

“I am excited about meeting new people and building stronger relationships with those I already know,” Young said in a press release issued by the university. “I’m looking forward to helping shape this top tiered alumni affairs program, making it possible for the students of today and beyond to experience the life changing impact that I and countless others have felt while at Francis Marion.”

Young will also work with key administrators to position the University positively within the greater Pee Dee.

“Julian has proven his ability to represent the essence and mission of Francis Marion. His desire for excellence and professionalism in tandem with his experience will help us connect with our alumni both here and around the world,” Libby Cooper, FMU’s vice-president for community and public affairs, said in the release.

A native of Florence, Young earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from FMU in 1976. He also studied for two years in the graduate department of sociology at the University of South Carolina. He will graduate in May with a master’s degree in education from FMU.

Young came to work at his alma mater in December 2005 as assistant director of admissions. Before that, he had been a full-time youth minister for 16 years in Georgia, Mississippi and South Carolina. He also was employed by ACS Technologies.

“We are delighted to have Julian lead our alumni relations program,” Cooper said. “He brings a wealth of experience and a natural ability to relate well with many people. He will be a valuable resource as we continue to serve our alumni.“

Young and his wife, Becky, have a 16-year-old son, Russell.
