A 16-year-old Florence boy is being charged as an adult after deputies said he sexually assaulted a 2-year-old, Florence County Sheriff’s Lt. Brett Camp said.

Jesse Luke Hughes, of 2339 Yancy Drive, is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under 11 years of age, Florence County Detention Center bookings reports show.

Deputies said the suspect sexually assaulted a 2-year-old he was babysitting July 15, Camp said.

Hughes is charged as an adult because of the nature of the case, Camp said.

Hughes remains in custody at the Effingham jail awaiting a bond hearing before a circuit court judge.
