Florence police search for missing woman
FLORENCE — Police suspect foul play may be involved in the disappearance of 69-year-old woman reported missing Monday.
Family members last spoke with Willie Mae Hayes about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Florence Police Maj. Carlos Raines said.
Her family suspected something was wrong when they couldn’t reach her and she didn’t show up to work Monday at a day-care center where she is employed, Raines said.
Police began to investigate Monday afternoon soon after she was reported missing, Raines said. When officers arrived at her home in the 200 block of West Liberty Street, it looked like someone had forced his or her way inside.
Several items, in addition to Hayes’ car, were stolen from her home, Raines said.
Officers later found Hayes’ vehicle backed into a parking space at an apartment complex on Roughfork Street, which is about a block from her home. Raines said it appears people other than Hayes had been in the car recently.
Raines said investigators are extremely concerned about the situation.

You’re yelling at the PD for what is obviously a failure in leadership at a higher level. The last time I checked, there were supposed to be 18 new officers added to the force (a promise made in 2006 after a King Avenue woman was murdered), but the Mayor & City Council have YET to identify the funding source for even ONE new officer. Due at least in part because they feared raising taxes would get them un-elected. Well, some of them no longer have to fear that, so there are no more excuses to be made along those lines. I’ll be very surprised if they live up to that promise, especially since they are now claiming “juvenile crime is down.“ And, if you are one of those people who want the police to do more with less, then you are responsible for your share of “what in the world is going on in this town.“
What in the world is going on in this town? In a weeks time there has been one teen missing…another teen murdered and now an elderly woman is missing!!!!
