Florence County family back in spotlight with release of new Depp, Bale movie

What does Christian Bale have to do with Florence, South Carolina?

The Hollywood superstar, who also plays the latest incarnations of Batman and Terminator foe John Connor, now also stars as Timmonsville native Melvin Purvis in the upcoming movie, “Public Enemies.“

Johnny Depp also stars in the movie, which comes out Wednesday, as notorious bank robber John Dillinger, who Purvis helped track down and arrest as an investigator with the F.B.I. in the heyday of gangster violence and corruption in the nation’s heartland.

Purvis is also the subject of a South Carolina ETV documentary, entitled “G-Man: The Rise And Fall Of Melvin Purvis.“

That documentary preimeres July 2, one day after the release of “Public Enemies.“

However, the public is invited to an advance screening, free of charge, of the documentary on Sunday, June 28, at the Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library on Dargan Street in Florence.

The showing starts at 6:00 p.m.
