Florence County on Friday will hold a ground-breaking ceremony for a new animal control facility.

The event will take place at 11 a.m. behind the county’s current animal control offices, across from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, on Friendfield Road in Effingham.

Last year, more than 8,000 animals came through the pound, which five years ago held 2,500 animals.

The new facility will feature a surgery room where spaying and neutering can be done. The facility also will include more than 50 dog pens and an intake area that will hold 100 cats, as well as a smaller intake area that will hold about three dozen cats.

The new building, unlike the current pound, will be climate controlled and well ventilated.

For more information, call Florence County Clerk to County Council Connie Y. Haselden at (843) 665-3035.
