Deputies from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Enforcement Unit (CEU) have been selected by United States Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Border Patrol to participate in the inspection of vehicles and individuals entering the United States at the U.S. Port of Entry Stations at El Paso, Texas, this week.
At the largest of three points of entry at El Paso, more than 1,300 vehicles cross the border from Mexico into the United States per hour, according to the press release.
The Florence County CEU worked with agents from the United States Customs and Border Protection and the U. S. Border Patrol joint Anti-terrorism/Contraband Enforcement Team (AT-CET) in the inspection efforts.
During the week of operation, Florence County CEU interdicted more than 1,100 pounds of marijuana, over 800 pounds of which was discovered on one tractor-trailer truck.
“Our CEU was selected by Customs and Border Protection and the Border Patrol to participate in this elite operation because of their recognized expertise in contraband interdiction. We are proud of their work here and on the nation’s border,” Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said.

I know this is off the subject, but have you ever noticed that political correctness is a one-way street?
Also, have you noticed that when you get notification that someone has responded that when you click on the link it no longer goes directly to spot? Spell check doesn’t work now either, or is it just me?
I don’t disagree with you about this on the whole, Scarecrow, but the RA is off fighting 2 wars. The NG is doing a LOT of the heavy lifting with regards to those conflicts, so what you have left are the civilian LE officers to assist the overburdened Border Patrol to do Interdiction work. They’re doing the same job there as here, and it gives them invaluable experince for when they come home to I-20 & I-95.
Not at all Dave. It is short for Politically Correct. These control freaks are behind half the hate and discontent in the US. At present the PC crowd has a lock on the Government. Their leader sits in the White House. One mans opinion.
I will likely feel real stupid when you answer my question scarecrow457, but who is the PC crowd?
What is needed on the border is the border patrol we have, only reinforced by REGULAR army, not NG, or unqualified local police who are better suited to dealing with civil issues. Not to mention said police are needed in their own jurisdictions. The only reason the REGULAR ARMY is not on the border is the PC crowd are firmly in control. Nothing will be done until they are NOT in control.
It seems to me that Florence County Sheriff’s Office should be used soley in Florence County as we have more than enough problems and we do not need to be versed in checking vehicles at an international border . Maybe the National Guard as a two week training summer camp ?
The front in the current drug war with illegals is far closer to home than you realize. Remember the rolling stash found on I-20 with the man & woman who hid out for 2 days in the bushes? There are many reasons why our local enforcers go to the border to assist in the effort; among these are the skills which they need to maintain in order to fight it better when they return home. It’s a bit like sending the National Guard to train at a base in California when Fort Jackson is right here in Columbia. Some skills need to be maintained by actually doing them.
Dave you just hit the nail on the head. Your comment #4 says it all.
1. I know alcohol can do as much damage to a person as illegal drugs, but alcohol is not illegal per se unless under age users are involved. How in the world can a person engage themselves in such behavior knowing they can go to jail for it as well as ruin their lives? Is it the challenge of not getting caught as much as the use itself? I don’t know.
2. Having been across the border at El Paso I know the lay of the land. There must be 6 lanes going in and 6 going out. Right now there is a drug war going on just across the Rio Grand River in Juarez. 30 or so people have been killed in the last month. I hope these deputies learned a lot on their border duty but that should be the job of the Federal Government not Florence County’s job.
3. If your house were on fire you likely would not go help your neighbor with a plumbing problem. That is what we are doing in the 3 wars we are fighting now. Yes, illegal aliens getting into this country is a war not being fought as it should be fought. The inflow of people over the Mexican border must be stopped at all cost. We are being over run with all kinds of undesirables, including terrorist. If it is necessary to bring the troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan to man the borders and keep them out, so be it. Those wars are important, but guarding our own borders is more important.
4. In addition, the illegal aliens getting across the borders are sucking our country dry and Joe Wilson was telling the truth not the president. Illegal are bleeding our health care system to death and taxpayers ARE footing the bill for it right now and even more so if congress passes the so called health care reform act.
5. Next election we MUST vote the incumbents out or we are finished as a nation if that isn’t too little to late. D.C. is totally out of control.
They now snub thier noses at the people that elected them.
scarecrow457 you didn’t understand what I was saying. I said that I didn’t know whether it was right or wrong, I’m no (druggie)What I said was educate, and it seems like you need to start with the basics.
