Florence police foil $10,000 check scam

FLORENCE — Seven people have been arrested in connection with a counterfeit check scam that resulted in more than $10,000 in losses for several Pee Dee businesses.

Florence police investigators said the scam began in October and included hundreds of counterfeit checks drawn on legitimate business accounts.

The suspects used computers to generate fake checks with real business names and bank accounts, Florence Police Maj. Carlos Raines said.

The bogus checks appeared very real, so the average person wouldn’t be able to determine that they were fake, Raines said.

Police said the ringleaders would create the checks and make them payable to other suspects who were willing to go to Florence businesses and cash them in exchange for a cut of the profit.

It can take several weeks or months for a check to go through the banking system, so the suspects were able to run the scam for many months, Raines said.

Once it was clear to a merchant that someone had been cashing fraudulent checks through their businesses, the account numbers and business names were red-flagged.

Investigators said the scam began to crumble when the scammers visited the merchants one too many times with the bogus checks, Raines said. Police eventually traced the operation to a home in Quinby where they found several identification cards, blank checks, check-making software, Social Security cards and signature stamps.

Arrested in connection with the case were Rodney Darrell Graham, 29, of 3673 Wilkes Road in Olanta; Ronald Patrick Price, 35; Keyone Shanard Green, 26, of 109 Ross St. in Darlington; Cory Jamal Brockington, 28, of 603 Simmons St. in Florence; Judean White, 42, of 104 Countryside Lane in Florence; Trevor Brandon Doby, 26, of 1102 Kershaw St. in Florence; and James Rasheed Evans, 30, of 107 Wildwood Drive in Florence.

Green, Brockington and White are each charged with two counts of forgery-value less than $5,000, Florence County Detention Center booking reports show.

Green is also charged with criminal conspiracy, second-degree computer crime act violation and financial identity fraud.

Brockington also faces a criminal conspiracy charge.

Price, Evans and Graham are each charged with forgery-value less than $5,000, booking reports show.

Doby is charged with two counts of forgery-less than $1,000, federally chartered or insured financial institution crime and forgery (no dollar amount involved).

Police are still searching for Trenton Smith, 20, of Darlington, Latoria Hickson, 22, of Florence and Shonda Shontel Jackson, 21, of Florence., Raines said.

Anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to call the police department at (843) 676-8800 and Crime Stoppers of the Pee Dee at (888) CRIME SC (274-6372). Callers need not reveal their identities.

At least commonsense understood the point I was trying to make.  You commented on the individuals being black but did not indicate that you had looked them up on FCSO.org.  I am well aware of that.  And, just because you voted for Barack doesn’t mean you are not racist.  I think we know who the real loser is here.  Someone who thinks that because they voted for the first black president and then makes comments like you did that they are not racist.

Why in the world do some of you people keep defending your race when your people are out committing these crimes.

It’s not just blacks .. it’s white’s .. it’s mexicans ... it’s everybody.

I am commenting on the individuals specific to this article and situation.

And .. YES ... practically everyone has been arrested multiple times.

And you will defend these people.

I voted for Barack .. so get over these racial junk you want to keep throwing around.

Lisa, what is sad is how narrow-minded and pathetic your comments are.  How dare you call anyone a loser when you don’t even have your facts straight?  Black youth are not running Florence into the ground. The crime problem here is not just to blame on blacks, and for you to suggest that is plain ridiculous.  Instead of you sitting back being judgmental you should be trying to be a good citizen and assist the city with solutions to this crime problem.  People complain but it’s interesting to me how no one is offering any solutions to this issue.  You need to do YOUR research. Let me tell you that I am a black woman that has a successful black husband that is around the age of most of these young men and we are successfully raising sons that are not the stereotypes you seem to feel so strongly about. (If it wasn’t about race you would not have mentioned it in the opening line of your comment.  There are some blacks that are educated, you know.)

NOT N the Know: Go to www.fcso.org and research all these individuals.

One is white .. the rest black.

Do your research before you post comments.

Ok, first let me start by saying I’m a white male and I thought this was racist.  And I’m not their mothers that “are going to cry racism” as you said, but what you said is surely racism in every facet of the word.

There is nothing in this article that I saw that states that these individuals are black.  I realize that a couple of the names represent the thought the they are black but you can’t always go by that.

What we need to look at here is the fact is these were mostly young kids that decided to break the law.  No matter their race.  It doesn’t matter what your skin color is when you break the law.

What is truly sad, as you say, is the fact that you automatically assumed that all these people where “black juveniles” without knowing for sure.  What you should be sad for is the fact is that it was juvenilles period!!

WOW! When are these young black kids going to stop trying to run the Florence area into the ground?

It’s ridiculous how many black juveniles are committing so many crimes.

I know .. I know. Many of you mothers of these kids are going to cry racism. This is not about race ... I’m just commenting on what we ALL see on a daily basis.

It is truly sad! :(
