Florence police foil $10,000 check scam

FLORENCE — Seven people have been arrested in connection with a counterfeit check scam that resulted in more than $10,000 in losses for several Pee Dee businesses.

Florence police investigators said the scam began in October and included hundreds of counterfeit checks drawn on legitimate business accounts.

The suspects used computers to generate fake checks with real business names and bank accounts, Florence Police Maj. Carlos Raines said.

The bogus checks appeared very real, so the average person wouldn’t be able to determine that they were fake, Raines said.

Police said the ringleaders would create the checks and make them payable to other suspects who were willing to go to Florence businesses and cash them in exchange for a cut of the profit.

It can take several weeks or months for a check to go through the banking system, so the suspects were able to run the scam for many months, Raines said.

Once it was clear to a merchant that someone had been cashing fraudulent checks through their businesses, the account numbers and business names were red-flagged.

Investigators said the scam began to crumble when the scammers visited the merchants one too many times with the bogus checks, Raines said. Police eventually traced the operation to a home in Quinby where they found several identification cards, blank checks, check-making software, Social Security cards and signature stamps.

Arrested in connection with the case were Rodney Darrell Graham, 29, of 3673 Wilkes Road in Olanta; Ronald Patrick Price, 35; Keyone Shanard Green, 26, of 109 Ross St. in Darlington; Cory Jamal Brockington, 28, of 603 Simmons St. in Florence; Judean White, 42, of 104 Countryside Lane in Florence; Trevor Brandon Doby, 26, of 1102 Kershaw St. in Florence; and James Rasheed Evans, 30, of 107 Wildwood Drive in Florence.

Green, Brockington and White are each charged with two counts of forgery-value less than $5,000, Florence County Detention Center booking reports show.

Green is also charged with criminal conspiracy, second-degree computer crime act violation and financial identity fraud.

Brockington also faces a criminal conspiracy charge.

Price, Evans and Graham are each charged with forgery-value less than $5,000, booking reports show.

Doby is charged with two counts of forgery-less than $1,000, federally chartered or insured financial institution crime and forgery (no dollar amount involved).

Police are still searching for Trenton Smith, 20, of Darlington, Latoria Hickson, 22, of Florence and Shonda Shontel Jackson, 21, of Florence., Raines said.

Anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to call the police department at (843) 676-8800 and Crime Stoppers of the Pee Dee at (888) CRIME SC (274-6372). Callers need not reveal their identities.

All…I feel into lisa’s trap as well. She can make you so furious. We should just stop responding to her foolishness. It only makes us look as foolish as she does when we follow her up. I believe she reaaly gets off on seeing who she can make the maddest. Because she has no life, this is how she communicate. She a pitiful sad soul that has no one or nothing to live for. She obviously have no job, but I believe she has a house full of babies because she talks like one. Pray for this lost soul. She really do need prayer.

Lisa, you can not go around being a narrow-minded person.  The economy is bad for everybody. Not only the African American, but all ethnic groups are suffering. You need to stop saying the word black, because I’m pretty sure that, all of them were different complexions. Black means Dark. God controls the universe, and you are “NOT” definitely not Him. Stop being so judgemental.  You will be judge as well…

Thank you commonsense! I returned to Florence last year after 25 years. Florence is no different than the rest of the country. People looking for easy money without working for it. Nothing to do with race, but alot to do with greed and laziness!

Really, it is of no consequence to me what Lisa thinks about me or what my husband does.  The facts are that she is a loud-mouth racist and that there is indeed a crime problem in the Florence area.  It always amazes me how there are racist people here with such a backwoods mentality.  As a new resident of Florence, I am not only stunned by the racist attitudes here but also by the fact that the crime rate here seems to be so high for a city that is really not that large.  So for “Lisa” and any other racist that desires to post ridiculous comments, you can blame Blacks all day for the shortcomings of this community.  It won’t change the fact that this crime issue is EVERYONE’s problem.

I can’t believe anyone would post a comment like the 1st one posted by Lisa and then try to say it’s not about racism.  I have never read a more racist comment in my life.  You then backtrack and say it’s all races—then why say it’s the black youth that are running Florence in the ground.  The men and women charged in this crime are NOT “YOUNG BLACK KIDS” OR “JUVENILES” they range in age from 20-42 years old and that makes all of them adults.  You also posted a rely to N the Know about her being a “typical black female”—N the Know stated that HE is a WHITE MALE. Commonsense is the black female who is proud of her family.  Your comment about telling her husband to keep the pickles off your hamburger shows that you are not only racist but ignorant and I don’t think any of us want you associated with our RACE no matter what it is. You are an example of ignorant white trash who believe they are better than everyone just because you are white. Even if a person is making hamburgers for a living, at least they are working and contributing to their family by any means necessary, and to assume that is what her husband does because he is black is also racist and ignorant.

Lisa, could you please stop speaking for white people and stop acting like everyone else is making it about race when you have to make a racial comment on every story EXCEPT the ones where white people mess up or get arrested. You are offensive and uneducated and it makes you look stupid.

I hope that people who reads this knows that you only speak for ignorant white people, not all white people.

N the Know :

You’re a typical young black female who thinks she is entitled, blessed and a pioneer because you have struggled your whole life and have now seen a black president be elected.

Shush your big mouth ... nobody needs to hear your junk in your trunk.

Tell your husband to keep the pickles off my hamburger.

Thankee…
