Many of you may have notice flags lowered Sunday.

That’s because October 5th is recognized as an observance day of fallen firefighters across the nation.

Sunday all flags in Florence outside federal buildings were lowered not just there, but all across the country.

“It’s a good feeling to help maybe get us some support,“ Jeff Delung, Battalion Chief.

In 2001, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks President Bush made the lowering a requirement.

Now on October 5th each and every firefighter is remembered on one day for what happened and what could.

“Almost every call we go on we could be subject to not coming back,“ Delung said.

On 9/11 343 firefighters and paramedics were killed in the line of duty.

While Delung didn’t know any of the men and women personally it’s a day he and his men will never forget.

“We never know and we don’t want to take it lightly, and we don’t want the public to take it lightly just because it didn’t happen here doesn’t mean it can’t,“ Delung said.

While firefighters may be remembered one day, Delung said they hope their public duties won’t be forgotten because fire is a risk they fight everyday.

The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was held in Maryland Sunday.

The Florence Fire Department sent three of their men to the service.
